Interview with Matthew Gilman

What's the story behind your latest book?
I wanted to create something new in the Zombie genre. I wanted to have a story where the world had not completely fallen apart and society was still held together and somewhat normal.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I wrote my first novel four years ago and didn't know what to do with it. a friend suggested Amazon and said "what is the worst that can happen? nobody reads it?" I posted After the Day and was quickly onto writing my second book Red Tide.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I will soon find out.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The creative aspect of it. entering a new world that you create on your own and are able to explore through writing.
What do your fans mean to you?
Some are close and keep in contact through Facebook and Instagram. It's always a joy to receive feedback even if it is creative criticism.
What are you working on next?
Daisy, a story about a girl raised by her father and finding herself held hostage in an all girl's school by Islamic terrorist. With a brown belt in Judo and a collection of 80's action flick one liners she works in the background trying to foil the attack and save her new friends from a gruesome end.

What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
food
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Hunting, fishing, gardening, playing with my daughter, fixing typewriters.

Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
it was a western in 3rd grade that i never finished.
What is your writing process?
idea, notes, first draft, rewrite, edit, final draft.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The Amazing Adventures of Cavalier and Clay by Michael Chabon. This book had everything I was interested in complete in one story. A historical tale of WWII with escape artist, comic books, and Jewish Folklore.
How do you approach cover design?
I was a graphic design student so those skill I learned come in handy with cover creativity.
What do you read for pleasure?
fiction and non fiction, it depends on my mood and interest at the time.

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a neighborhood referred to as the student ghetto where poor college students could rent a house for low prices. the neighborhood was an odd mix of students, family homes, and low income housing. one could see several aspects of life on one street.
When did you first start writing?
I first became interested in writing in high school when i was drawing my own comic books and self publishing through the local shops.
