Interview with Colten Steele

What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Providing Free stories. I don't write to make money. I write for my own pleasure and then share.
Describe your desk
Shhhh, I write at work when I can get away with it. I sit in a cube.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Ohio, but have lived in Georgia for over 25 years. I was introduced to Science Fiction at a young age and have a soft spot for it, though I read any and all fiction.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing poetry in high school. I am only able to write good poetry when I am depressed though, and currently I am enjoying life. The secret to turning my life around was finding my way back to church, which I had been running away from for decades.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I enjoy reading other author's free books. I do not purchase any books because I still have access to a library and enjoy the feel of paper, but I will download and read anything free that looks interesting.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I only really have written one novel, and you won't find it online. It is a story about a planet humans evacuate to after we destroy our own. Unfortunately, while I think it is my best work, it is part of a trilogy... I am just missing books two and three. I would hate to publish it without finishing the story.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love hearing how other people enjoyed my stories. Please let me know if you liked it.
What do your fans mean to you?
I don't know if I have any fans :-)

If I did have some fans I would certainly be encouraged to write more.
What are you working on next?
My brother read Zombie Threat and suggested I continue the theme from other angles. I am interested in expanding the story into many related branches.
Who are your favorite authors?
Wilbur Smith has always been my favorite author. I read just about anything though.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I work as a programmer, I play geek board games with my kids and wife (Catan, 7 Wonders, Ticket to Ride), I watch TV (Big Bang Theory, Walking Dead, Survivor), I attend a Baptist church multiple nights and volunteer.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I wrote a poem when I was 15 about what I thought was love at the time. It had a dragon in it :-)
What is your writing process?
I come up with the idea which becomes my goal. I then try to form an interesting story to reach the goal. Sometimes it works, and sometimes I cannot come up with a plausible way to reach the goal and I am left with half of a story.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I read my E-books on a Kindle.
How do you approach cover design?
I have no artistic talent. I rely on others to create covers for me and give them credit in the stories.
