Interview with Greg Saunders

What do you read for pleasure?
Such an interesting question. I read widely in a diverse variety of genre. If I had to pick one that I return to time and time again, it would be fantasy. I love to be immersed in richly visioned worlds like Peter V. Brett's Demon Cycle or Sanderson's Stormlight Archive. The impossible is always possible. Worlds with magic, seemingly insurmountable evil, daring do's, and flawed, soul tortured heroes. Nothing else like it. I consume alternate history, historical fiction, modern thrillers, scifi and the really good zombie stuff. I certainly read for pleasure, but also for ideas and sincere appreciation of the craft.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
E-reading device? iPad works perfect for me. Sharp resolution and good real estate.
Describe your desk
My desk is a couch and a laptop. I prop my feet up, kick back and let the words flow.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Seven Dimensions of Sam was an idea that I'd been kicking around for quite awhile. Dreams, reality and alternate parallel worlds. Such a rich playground. I will say that the most interesting backstory was for Heartwood. I had just finished Zahir and was looking for something new to create a story around. A friend of mine was laughing at my struggle and said, "here, write about a stick", while handing me a pencil. Cool, I can do that. Heartwood was originally titled "Stick", a creature defending its territory in a world much changed from when last it strode the paths of its forest domain.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The creative process. Building characters, worlds and plots. Losing myself for hours at a time in something totally under my control.
What are you working on next?
I am revisiting the world I created in Unknown Country. The new book is tentatively titled "Light of The Inner World". What lies beneath the surface of the world the humans call Myth? New alien races? Ancient yet incredibly advanced technology? And perhaps what Commander Mac Crow wants most, a way home. Or will slavery or death be all they find?
Who are your favorite authors?
Gemmell, Fiona Mackintosh, Sanderson, Brett, Brad Thor, John Ringo and so many others.
