Interview with Gloria Arenson

When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I am a licensed psychotherapist and love my work. I am constantly learning from each of my clients. The more I learn and the more I see the amazing changes in my clients' lives, the more it inspires me to write about it. I want readers to benefit from all of that.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I am a compulsive reader and have been since childhood. I am absolutely voracious! I adore eBooks and download them from Amazon, my public library and some of the other internet sources I get emails from. My husband shares the same obsession so we also recommend books that we like to each other.
What is your writing process?
Most of my books result from letting the years of counseling gel into classes and workshops that I have been privileged to teach. As I create these classes I organize the material in such a way that I can eventually turn the topics into self help books for those who can't come in person.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
When I was 7 years old my mother needed to have surgery so I was sent to visit my aunt in another city while she recuperated. My aunt took me to an enormous bookstore and told me to choose any book I wanted. I chose "Little Lord Fauntleroy" by Frances Hodgson Burnett. I fell in love with it and became an addict from then on. Books have always been my good friends.
How do you approach cover design?
I am extremely fortunate to be married to a professional graphic designer and artist so I turn that over to him with trust and confidence in his talent.
What do you read for pleasure?
I am a literary omnivore. I love science fiction and also mysteries, especially those that also teach me about different cultures. I also tend to get lost in biographies and plays. I find pleasure in reading about science and psychology too.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
My Kindle
Describe your desk
I write at my computer. In general I am extremely neat and love to have things organized so I sometimes use manilla folders.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in New York City in the Bronx. What influenced my writing was my 5th-6th grade teacher who encouraged and nurtured us. I was fortunate to be in a special class for the gifted where our teacher didn't use text books or stay within the confines of the curriculum. We were encouraged to learn and to learn how to write clearly. Those years gave me the grounding to become who I am now and also gave me the training in expressing myself.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My most recent book, Desserts Is Stressed Spelled Backwards, reflects my experience from over 35 years of specializing in counseling people with eating disorders. Along the way I discovered that many of my clients were also compulsive spenders, alcoholics, love addicts etc.

Cravings arise from life STRESS that upsets the balance of the dopamine and serotonin in the brain. Deprivation diets is not the answer. The compulsive person needs to become aware of what is causing the stress and deal with that using
