Interview with S Labrecque

Published 2014-10-14.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Getting to school on time.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I play geeky games with my family.
How do you discover the books you read?
The only times I get to read are in between classes. I find those books by wandering around the fiction section of the library reading the back covers of books until I find one that looks good enough to try.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
No, but I remember one of the first. It was a super hero story about a girl who discovers that she and her friends are actually the next set of interstellar warriors that have to save the solar system from a band of villains. Looking back on it now the writing was actually pretty bad (I was seven or something), but maybe someday I'll go back and rewrite the idea. Maybe. No promises.
What is your writing process?
It's pretty random. I get an idea in my head. Usually it's a character who sometimes isn't even the protagonist who I want to write a book around. I start writing and make up the plot and world along the way. From there it just expands.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I don't remember the first story I've ever read. When I first started reading it was in elementary school, and I was never as into it as my family. Somewhere towards the middle of elementary school I really started to love it. I've read too many books to count by now.
How do you approach cover design?
Actually, I have a cousin Bonita who's a really good artist. She's awesome and did my cover design for me.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Oh goodness. Okay... well, the Dresden Files might be my favorite book series ever. I also really love the Alarin Series (I don't know if I spelled that right) and Harry Potter. (Who doesn't love Harry Potter). After that I really don't know. I love so many!

Joyah Pain had always kinda known that she was not a normal girl. She’d never known just how not normal she was, however, until a discovery sends her off on an ancient family mission, the Journey, away from her safe little village and into the world.
