Interview with G. H. Bright

What motivated you to become an indie author?
Simply to " Get out there" in the easiest way possible.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Early days but yes, I think this was a good move. The Site is helpful too, which you don't always get elsewhere.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Getting the story down.
Simple answer for a simple question. I enjoy all aspects (selling/management/marketing) but obviously the story is the main part.
Even if the book did not sell, I would still have created something and that is what matters the most to me.
What are you working on next?
The Woodman book Four. Due (I hope) May 2014. I also have two war/love stories almost ready to go out. One is WW2 and set in Jersey. The other is an account of my Grandparents who met during WW1. My Grandfather being shot and needing tender care, fell in love with Ethel. Put simply, if he had not suffered so badly I would not be here. I think the story needs telling.
Who are your favorite authors?
James Patterson. Karen Rose. Simon Kernick.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Either in/at my day job or with family. We walk the beach, take the dog to the pub...the usual things.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Enter my name as seen on the book on these pages OR the book title. On Smashwords there is also the ISBN Number to go by.
What is your writing process?
It varies. With The Woodman it comes together as I write. I know the start and end and the rest just comes off the page. With Snigger it was different. I wrote the whole thing then started over again as the story changed. That might sound strange, and it might be strange, but sometimes the story takes over. It bothers me losing so much work, but not for long. It seems to be part of the process. With the Erotic books, I seem to know the whole thing right from the off. An idea comes to me and then I see the whole outline. From there it's a simple case of getting it down.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Kids books at school, obviously, but none of them seem to stick with me except Stig of the Dump. As a Teen I read "Skinhead" and then progressed to James Herbert. I loved the Rats trilogy.
How do you approach cover design?
I locate the pictures myself using a free on-line company or, mainly, I see something whilst out walking the dog (or walk him somewhere special) and take the picture myself. If another member of the family has had input to the cover, I state that fact inside the first pages of the book. All wording etc is taken care of by me.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I have a Kindle but I'm open to suggestion sif you have anything else kicking about...
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
Hampshire, a county full of history and ghosts, army bases and navy bases. The old A3 road ran near my home and the thought of Nelson and bandits riding that road filled my with awe. Not far away, the Devils Punchbowl also filled me with wonder.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My grandparents. Norman was badly injured in WW1, should really have died from his injuries but, because it was so cold, his blood froze and stopped bleeding. Ethel, a nurse at the time, nursed him back to health and she became my Nan.
I just thought I needed to put it down and get it done lest their story be forgotten.
What do you read for pleasure?
James Paterson, Simon Kernick, Karen Rose
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
For publishing, it was The Woodman.
Published 2014-02-08.
