Interview with GS Wright

Published 2013-08-28.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the city of Twin Falls, in Southern Idaho. You can see the influence of Twin Falls in my novel BROKEN THINGS, and in my upcoming modern fiction. In Broken Things, the story travels from Twin Falls to Boise. I don't know if I'm interested in writing outside of Idaho, because as a setting that I know, I can more vividly bring it to life.
When did you first start writing?
I've been writing most of my life. Throughout the nineties and into the next decade, I focused primarily on short stories.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I really enjoy indie authors. I love discovering incredible talent chasing the dream the same way that I am, on their own. There are authors that are as professional as anything you'd find from the big publishers, and most are far more accessible to their fans than authors of the past. Maybe that's a bias of mine, but I enjoy getting to know a little about the authors of the books I read.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I love having total creative control, and I love being able to publish on my schedule, and not wait for the book months down the road. Once I knew that I could independently publish, I didn't even bother looking for an agent or traditional publishing option. Though it feels like a hard road at times, it's very rewarding.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy that writing has brought me is that it has allowed me to work from home and spend more time with my family. Second, it has created a way for me to share my stories and give my creativity an outlet.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest novel is Death Storm. It's a dark fantasy zombie apocalypse. It mixes my two favorite genres, fantasy and horror. It is planned to be a three book series.
What are you working on next?
I really want to get the sequel to Death Storm out (Book 2 in the Hungry Gods series), and then on to the conclusion. I am also working on a modern horror novel with my take on vampires (my goal is to make them scary again). I have other works in progress going on, but those are the ones taking up most of my time.
