Interview with Gunnar Angel Lawrence

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Orlando, Florida where the climate is temperate to moderate and stormy to calm several times a day. The culture of Orlando being a laid back area is a great place to set amazing stories. The people, for the most part, are friendly, giving and unapologetic Southerners. In this type of area, thrillers take on a new vibe and horror becomes unspeakable.
When did you first start writing?
When I was in Junior High and High School, I was every English teachers dream. I loved school! The terrors known as other students, not so much. I wrote horror, comedy, anything that could take my mind off the day to day threats of school bullies. It's okay now though, because I just put the bullies I remember in a book and kill them in a terrible way.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Fair Play is a thriller set in Orlando about a child murderer who is freed on a technicality. After the Casey Anthony trial, many of us Central Floridians were asking sincere questions on how a lawyer who knows his client is guilty deals with the guilt of working to set a guilty person free. In Fair Play, an attorney is confronted with these feelings when a man calling himself, Justice begins taking matters of the law into his own hands.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Originally, I wanted a contract. I wanted the book deal. I even wanted the agent. After Fair Play had been written, I spent more than a year trying to find any one of the three. Sites like Smashwords gave me the opportunity to publish my work sans anyone else's involvement or approval. Today, I'm not sure I would take any of the three things I initially believed to be so important.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
In one word, Opportunity.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Living and breathing in another world. Bringing characters to life on the page (or screen) and living vicariously a life I could never hope to live for real.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything. The encouragement. The wonderful reviews from people I have never met or even laid eyes on. They are great!
What are you working on next?
The sequel to Fair Play is entitled The Perfect Day. Essentially the detective from the first book begins investigating a double murder that reveals a terrorist plot in his home city of Orlando. An international terrorist called Ali the Sand Viper has come to Orlando to wreak havoc and it's up to Paul Friedman and the citizens of Orlando to put an end to it all.
Who are your favorite authors?
Steven James, Steven King, Agatha Christie, and Piers Anthony.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Meet the Robinson's - KEEP MOVING FORWARD.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Reading. Working out in the gym. Listening to 1980's music and pretending I have enough talent to dance.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Author friends, recommendations.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
YES! It was a sci-fi epic featuring a man who sneaks aboard a space craft that malfunctions and sends him and the crew to a distant planet where they meet a race of serpent people.
What is your writing process?
Wake up. Eat. Write.
Pee. Write.
Eat. Write.
Pee, Sleep.
Go To Bed.
How do you approach cover design?
Book content dictates the design. I write in a number of different genres so it really depends on that. Font, picture and everything comes into play.
What do you read for pleasure?
Thrillers, Crime and Mystery, Humor, Romance
What is your e-reading device of choice?
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Let me answer this one after The Perfect Day is released.
Describe your desk
It's a table that folds down into a bed. I live in a camper.
