Interview with Harley Lyn

When did you first start writing?
I began writing my first "chapter book" when I was in the third grade. I was only eight years old!
What's the story behind your latest book?
My next novel is currently titled Diabolos and you can find the excerpt below:

Young, adventurous Katie Tomlin has worked for the United Angels Organization for the past three years. She’s lived all over the world with her team, working to enhance impoverished communities. Her team has finally been stationed in Jamaica; the place she has only dreamed about since she was hired. Her first night in the beautiful, cultured country, she stumbles upon a quiet, intimidating local; Cameron, and she can’t seem to get him out of her mind. She quickly learns that he is an active member of the Diabolos – the most dangerous, active gang in the country known for its murderous actions and its involvement in a drug war that has lasted for decades. Katie is warned by many to stay away from Cam, but when she learns that his nephew attends the school she now works at, she realizes that will be much harder than she ever expected. It seems at every attempt to stay away from Cam, she is only drawn in closer. Now, Katie must decide if risking her own life by trusting this man is worth a shot at an irresistible, breath-taking, life changing kind of love.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
As a writer, writing is not a choice. I HAVE to write. Writing is a release for me and releasing these stories that are trapped in my head truly bring me joy and happiness.
What do your fans mean to you?
I can't even begin to explain what it means to me to know that somebody out there is reading my story. I truly appreciate anybody who is willing to read and maybe even enjoy my work! So, to those people... THANK YOU!
Who are your favorite authors?
As of right now, my absolute favorite authors are Jamie McGuire and Simone Elkeles!
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Knowing that I always have a story to finish and I have characters to live through. My characters need to live their lives and my keyboard is the only way they can do that.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When I'm not writing, I'm spending most of my days at my "normal" full time 9-5, or rather my 7-6. I'm also still in college, so I spend quite a bit of time on homework. I love reading books, watching a lot of movies, going on walks, watching football (my Lions, of course!), and spending time with my dogs, my boyfriend, and my family!
What is your writing process?
I really don't have much of a process. I've tried several different methods, but creative flow works best for me. I don't spend much time outlining, either. When I think of an idea, I write down some main points and important details, and from there, I just sit down and write. Even if I have writers block, I keep going. If it doesn't make sense, I can delete it, but usually that writing will lead to my next great idea in my plot.
How do you approach cover design?
Cover design is very nerve-wracking for me. They say not to judge a book by its cover, but.... I do. I'll admit it. A cover pulls people in when they're browsing shelves or the internet. I want my covers to say something about me, my characters, and their story. I try to have a cover created that tells my fans what my story means to me, which is usually romance and adventure!
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the suburbs (about an hour Northwest of Detroit) and as much as I love my home, it's not the most exciting place... It has helped create a sense of adventure for me, and encouraged me to travel and explore, which is something I love to write about!
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Well, I wanted to be published because I was finally brave enough to share my work with the world, and I was proud of that. I chose to go indie because I don't like the idea of being told that my work is good enough to share by a publishing company. Not everyone will like my work, but I do, and nobody else can if they don't get the chance to read it! I love the idea of having control over my work and marketing myself. I like being my own boss and a business woman!
