Interview with Heather Grant

What do you read for pleasure?
Anything I pick up.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
The Nook Color.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I'll let you know when I have results that can qualify as "effective".
Describe your desk
Cluttered, but I know where everything I need is.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
The Chicago suburbs. Being so close to a major city while still trapped in suburbia, I think my writing always tended to be escapist, focused on people who always want to peer over the edge and experience something bigger.
When did you first start writing?
I've been writing stories since I can remember.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I love movies, and I love romantic new adult stories. In We Found Somewhere, I wanted to write about a young woman who really delves into the art of moviemaking, of acting. Lots of romances set in Hollywood focus so much on the glam, the fame, the guys. All that stuff is great. But I wanted to write a character who clearly cares about film, and wants to be a part of it. I wanted the reader to feel her hone her craft and put herself into her work. And of course, I also wanted to write a romantic comedy based around a Hollywood love triangle.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I like having control over my work. When I finally had a project I wanted to show the world, I figured I'd just put it out there. I hope people find and enjoy it.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
The option to let readers pay what they want for my book has, without question, led to more eyes on my work via Smashwords than any other outlet.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Getting to know my characters. I love starting out with these vague outlines of people, with a few general ideas, then writing with them, putting them in scenarios and situations and seeing how they'll react. I love when everything goes according to plan, when I throw my characters into a situation and it pays off just as I imagined, but just as much, I love when my characters surprise me, when I'm writing and I realize that this character is more fully realized now, and I have to adapt to their psyche to make the story work. And then, when the story is finished, I love seeing their journey and feeling pride for how they grew from page one to the final phrase.
What do your fans mean to you?
As soon as I have any, I'll let you know. But really, anyone who took the time to even download my book for free is the most meaningful thing I can imagine, because they took a chance on me. That's all I can ask, and I am eternally grateful for each and every single person who takes a chance on me.
What are you working on next?
I'm currently writing a sequel to We Found Somewhere. It was always my plan to make it a series, but once the first book was finished, I couldn't wait to get back to Abigail's journey to see what she'd do next. I hope any readers I may have feel the same.
