Interview with Heather Welch

Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The first story was C.S. Lewis - The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. We read it as a class at school, and I hung on every word. It became my favorite part of the day. Some days we'd beg the teacher for another chapter. When the book was done, I'd learned there were others. I couldn't wait to get my hands on those too. I'd rush to get home after school and be transported to Narnia. I breezed through the rest of the series in no time
What do you read for pleasure?
I haven't had much time for reading as of late. When I do, I love reading books in a series. To name a few more recent, I've read Suzanne Collins - The Hunger Games, Cassandra Clare - The Mortal Instruments, Alyson Noel - The Immortals, other authors include Charlaine Harris, L.J. Smith, Stephanie Meyer, and C.S. Lewis.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Word of mouth is always the most effective. Your are always more apt to buy something based on the praise given from someone you know. Aside from that the next best form of marketing has been through my Facebook page.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Rhode Island as the oldest of five. It was tough being the oldest, and I found writing and reading as an escape.
When did you first start writing?
I began writing as soon as I learned to read. Back in first grade I began writing stories just for my mother. As I got older, I began writing more detailed and longer stories. Then I started journaling and writing poetry. Anything I wanted to remember, went down on paper.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Castine is about a girl who finds herself in a world she thought only existed in the imagination of her childhood games. This book is loosely based on games I played as a child with my own brother and sister when we were children.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I wanted to be able to control my own work. I believe in what I've created in what I've written, and I didn't want to possibly have to make a choice to compromise the book's integrity in any way.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Writing has always given me a place to go that's all mine. The minute pen goes to paper or my fingers start typing, I am transported into the world only my mind has created. Sometimes even I don't know what will happen next until it is written. Writing is a way to put those places and characters into words that will bring happiness to others.
What do your fans mean to you?
I truly appreciate each and every person who reads one of my books. It brings me unspeakable joy to know that someone took the time to read and enjoyed reading one of my books. Keep your reviews coming. The readers are why I wrote Castine, and why I'm writing Entwined.
What are you working on next?
I'm working on Entwined, the second book in this series. Castine ends in a bit of a cliffhanger leaving room for another book and unanswered questions.
Who are your favorite authors?
C.S. Lewis is my favorite. I'd say from the first time I read Chronicles of Narnia. His work is timeless. I love Cassandra Clare's work. I plan to read a few more of her books as soon as time allows.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My two beautiful daughters are the reason I get up each day. Having two teenage daughters to try and set a good example for is a daily challenge that I don't take lightly.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Family time is the most important to me. Whether we are out at the beach, shopping or just watching a movie, I try to make each moment count with lots of selfies, doing silly things to make each other laugh, and chocolate. Got to have lots of chocolate.
