Interview with Commander James Bondage

Published 2016-11-06.
What are you working on next?
I have already started the second book of Trapped Princess, and I expect it to be available in December, possibly sooner. In the meanwhile, those of who simply can't wait for it are advised to try one of my many earlier books, such as Slaves of the Assyrian Empire or the underappreciated Cadet 3: General Staff, which I think is one of my best novels, in spite of the fact that almost nobody else seems to agree.
What do your fans mean to you?
Even after writing more than twenty-five books, I'm amazed to have any fans at all. I started writing because I enjoyed the stories I made up, but they were invented to suit me, my peculiar tastes and sense of humor, so I was surprised to find that there were other people who liked them as well. Nowadays, it is my readers who keep me at it. Without them, I probably would have hung up the old word processor long ago, at least in my Commander James Bondage persona.
Who are your favorite authors?
God! There are so many great ones. Right now, I would put Jack Vance at the top of my list. If you don't know him, just pick up anything he's written, science fiction or fantasy, and you will be in for a treat. I don't much like mysteries, but Lawrence Block's Hit Man series is funny, smart and generally irresistible. I very much like the military science fiction of the trio David Weber, Eric Flint and David Drake. The Ring of Fire series is brilliant, and the same goes for most but not all of the Honor Harrington novels. My Jodie Lawrence character in the Cadet series was in part inspired by Honor Harrington. As for authors of erotic fiction, I must tip my hat to the great J.J. Argus, who has been writing quality BDSM novels at an incredible rate for at least thirty years.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I am retired now, so I get to do what I like, at least some of the time. I read a lot, mostly history. I recently finished three excellent books by Robert Leckie about the about the World War II in the Pacific, where the author himself fought. I play chess on the internet, and have been a member of Chess.com for several years now. Weather permitting, I play golf whenever possible. One thing I would like to do with my free time is travel, but I lack the necessary funds, and will probably continue in this unhappy condition until more of you out there start buying my books.
