Interview with J W Murison

How do you approach cover design?
My covers are all designed by a lovely lady in Daytona Florida in the United States. She first bought one of my books from my website and loved it. Since then we have been in regular contact. When I told her I was looking for covers for a new paperback edition of my novels she offered to do one for me. I couldn’t believe the quality of them. The deal is she gets to read the first draught of any novel I write and will then go and design a cover for them.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Just pick any five Sven Hassel books. I can relate to the characters very well, and his style of writing makes you feel you are there with them every agonising step of the way
What do you read for pleasure?
I rarely get time to read these days, I think it is a sacrifice many authors make when they begin to write their own work. I do have a tendency to pick up one of my own novels now and then and relive the journey.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Kindle fire
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
None really, I sometimes feel that by the time I read about a new and successful marketing technique and try it everyone is sick of it. My sales are slow but steady, my readership is slowly rising and I find once people read one of my books they often read the rest.
Describe your desk
It is round and has a horn on it.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I was brought up on a farm in the Highlands of Scotland, I can't say exactly how it influences my writing because I'm not sure if it does.
When did you first start writing?
I was nine years old when I wrote my first novel. It wasn’t very big and had pictures of planes in it. I wish I could remember what the story was about.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Aha, you want secrets huh, ok it’s called Embers and is a supernatural crime thriller, and that’s all you are getting.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Publishers like it if you stick to a formula and a genre, I hate writing to many books in the same genre I get bored. I also like writing what I like when I like without being dictated to or writing synopsis of future novels.
