Interview with Hector Himeros

Published 2013-12-27.
When did you first start writing?
I was born a writer, I think. Since I was a toddler, I've loved books. I grew up as a nerd. I won a writing contest when I was a 6th grader. English is not my mother-tongue! However, during my school years, I scored higher in English rather than my native language! I started writing actively in English in 2000. However, serious commercial writings only started in early 2013.
What is your writing process?
First, I get the main idea. I picture the beginning and the possible ending. I also create the arts for my characters to give myself an image of what the novel will be like. The rest, I go with the flow. Most of my stories actually turn out differently from my original idea because as I write, my ideas evolve. Timeless: Titanic Chapter for example. The original idea placed reincarnation in the end, making readers think they're reading historical romance. But then I ditched the idea. Now, the novel becomes supernatural historical.
Do you write porn-with-lots-of-plots?
First, unlike what some M/M fangirls (who never read my stories) believe, the answer is NO. I'm an erotica writer! And with the release of my Romance Edition, I can also proudly call myself a romance writer. Second, there's no such thing as porn-with-lots-of-plots!

According to Smashwords: "If you develop characters that face the requirements of sexual relationships and grow through the relationships and challenges of their story, that would be an Erotic Romance, no matter how explicit the sex scene(s) is/(are). It's a matter of ratio, what percentage of the text is used for sex scenes. Porn writing is generally 90% or so sex, those writings are geared towards creating "desire" in their readers and are sometimes referred to as one-handed reading."

None of my Uncensored Editions have 90% explicit details. It's true that they contain pages of graphic and explicit details, but there are also emotions and the sex is crucial for the characters' relationship. I do write differently from some/most female writers.
How do you approach cover design?
I myself am a cover designer :) Thus, all my arts are my exact visions. Unlike other M/M cover artists, my style is cinematic. Many times, cover arts come first before the stories. I can finish a cover arts in a day while a story takes months!
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a homophobic country. Trust me, it's not a picnic to be constantly preached that I'll go to hell for my homosexuality by two major Abrahamic religions. Homophobia around me inspires most of my stories. For example, I created Father Phelps as the main culprit who unleashed the wrath of the Headless Horseman of Norcross in Bleak Woods. I added real-life homophobic quotes from Malaysian politicians, for authenticity, in Scripted Love.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I currently have two projects, spanning over several books. One is called Timeless, about reincarnation. A prince falls for a general but High Priest of Min also falls for the prince. The priest cast a reincarnation curse which ferry the three of them through ages, such as Sodom, Judah, ancient China, Spanish Inquisition, Tudors, Titanic, Hindenburg, even far future.

Another project is Dominus, about a man who's appointed by the angel Castiel as a Demon Master - Daemon Dominus. Together, they catch demons and imprison them inside the enchanted tome: Lesser Key of Solomon. The captured demons can be summoned to fight other demons or simply to do their master bidding.

Both series will be available in 2 main editions: Romance and Uncensored, and will contain mysteries and twist plots to add excitement. I personally also design the cover arts and character posters.
What are you working on next?
My next project will be about medieval kingdom and sorcery. I've got that idea after getting obsessed with Alistair from the game Dragon Age: Origins. I only have a vague idea about the plot. It's actually too early to announce it.
What do your fans mean to you?
Fans mean A LOT to me! They're the reason why I write. I also realize there are two types of readers. One group wants smut and the other doesn't want any. Therefore, my latest ebook will be available in two editions. It's a lot of work to create two separate editions of one same story. But I'm willing to do this for my fans!
What do you read for pleasure?
I only read M/M ebooks nowadays because I've spent my first 20 years reading heterosexual books. Not all M/M ebooks I read though. As a gay man, I prefer reading erotica, the well-detailed ones. Well, I'm not a hypocrite. Anyway, I do read other ebooks, such as encyclopedia and trivia. I mostly do this for research or simply to indulge my curiosity.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Simple... Because I love writing! And because I have too much imagination in my head. If I don't write them out of my head, I may go crazy :) Why indie? First, no publishers ask me to write for them yet. Second, with internet, everyone can be a writer. So I take my chance. However, IF later a publisher asks me to join, I may do that!
