Interview with Harry Jackson

What is the unique factor your book or books have compared to others before you?
Selective Quest is the FIRST eBook to ever include "Music & Read" technology. From the very beginning of your reading experience, the music helps put and keep you in the 'mood' of the story. I feel proud about that and it was not easy. I wanted our readers to really have the chance to "Get Involved" and the music helps our readers do just that.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
It always starts with friends and family. That will always be your core, your starting point, and your first base. I've always kept my actions a secret until I was ready to make my move. Then, they were the first to discover my creations. When it happens as a surprise, you catch them off guard. You get the best and most honest reactions. If you are successful with them, you have to ask the question that you know you're going to ask of those you don't know. That question is, would you be willing to pay to help support my efforts. When you are no longer afraid of their responds, you'll have no fear while building your fan base. As a new author, you have to be as brave as your story and most importantly, have an approach or direction that is so new and fresh that your readers will stay hungry!!
How do you approach cover design?
This book really went after a phrase that many song writers use. They like to say that we all are in a "Game of life" and as serious as our world problems have become, there had to be a way to let young and older readers understand that our conscience has to be our guide in life!!
Black & White Cover for book #1 is there a deeper meaning?
Life has always been about 'Truth & Lie', 'Religion & Science', and 'Rich & Poor'. Our five teenagers are like all of us and they go after the absolute truth. Book #2 in the series chases the fact that there is more than one God that we've been serving. Ever since our world because "Secular" we all changed with our devotion. All books have been written in black and white, there's many reasons why black and white was used in the game of chess, and of all the "Fallen Angles", some have tried to serve for the Good of humanity while others for the bad!! That's why a Trading Card Game was developed from this story!!
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
Elmira, New York in the great Southern Tier region of the state. I was born a few days before a major flood hit our area(remnants from hurricane Agnes in 1972. My Wife Mary was boated off of our property in Conklin, N.Y.(which is 2 minutes away from where our story takes place) on 9/18/2004 (which was the first of three floods we faced as a family) to give birth later that afternoon to my first daughter Marikka. I think I was so distraught from loosing everything we owned in the 2006 flood that prompted me to write! I had to do it for myself just to help keep my sanity. Elmira was known as Mark Twain country, and Binghamton was Rod Sterling country (Twilight Zone creator). So, I guess if I had a story to tell, I was in the right area. I'm in no way on their level but again, this was more of a 'peace of mind' thing for myself until a friend of mine stumbled across it and understood the final truth to the book series. That is what caused me to revise it and re-edit the book #1 and get it to Smashwords.
What's the story behind your latest book?
5 close friends discover the meaning of life with the help of new creatures called Petnals. The animals help by getting rid of their fears and also protect them as they leave everything behind to search for the truth!!
What are you working on next?
I finished writing story #2 back in 2011, but I am in the middle of re-editing because I wanted this one to be the most "interactive" book in history. Never before could the reader based on their age, sex, or conscience decide which direction or choice to move forward in or make decisions for the characters which changes the outcomes right in the book. That is how we bring reading to a whole new frontier. This would put the book on a level of a Play station or Xbox game!! I created the trading card version of the Selective Quest before I started writing Book #1. You can go to Facebook: to check the latest information on the game.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
You want to be able to tell a story with no limitations because in life, we learn as we go. Unforeseen occurrences happen to all of us. It's all about how we deal with them that determines if we will be able to survive them!!
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Self expression and the fact that someone has the opportunity of taking something you said or wrote about and apply it in their own lives. When someone says "thank you so much" because you helped them see things in a different light? Priceless!!
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
You will always be chasing success, but Smashwords give you the freedom of telling a story that the typical publishers may or may not pick up. Nowadays, you have to find a publisher that is in your field of literature. Then you have to hope they will pick it up and hope it becomes a success. Smashwords says not only that this is the way, but based on your efforts and direction, you can be just as good as the other authors and publishing companies. The sky is definitely the limit with Smashwords and I am forever grateful to them and their tools in the industry!!
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My Wife and three kids. I have been 100% disabled since 2010 due to a medical transport injury I suffered. I was transporting a patient to his medical appointment. I arrived at his home and loaded him onto a power lift which helped him enter out van. When his wheelchair reached the highest it could, it failed and he flipped backwards. If his chair would have hit the ground, he would have broken his neck. So I dove underneath him to cushion his fall. In so doing, he landed on me in his chair, but my back of my head smashed against his driveway. My workman's Doctor at the time did not want to run x-ray's but my pain was unbearable. He (the Doctor) claimed the x-rays we just bone spurs and so I went back to heavy transporting. Two days after my return, I transported a 520lbs patient (whom I've had 20 times before the neck injury) and when I lifted her chair to put her in our van, My entire left shoulder and arm gave out. After a second opinion, the second Doctor showed me the original M.R.I. that was taken and it showed I had two herniated areas in my neck (C3 and C4). After neck surgery, I have no strength in my left arm and I am in pain still to this day. I cannot get to the point of feeling irrelevant and that is what drives me every morning of every day!!
Describe your desk
Mostly, it's in order. There are always a lot of pens and pencils nearby.....I always notice when something is missing because it's the only time I need it! : )
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I am also a Casino Table Game Developer. I also am the creator of a 2-4 player chess board game called: Chess Empire (released in 2003) and I love proving to New York State that I have value and that I don't need to collect disability checks if I stay productive with my mind and heart. That is true living. : )
