Interview with Keith Shaver

Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The first story that comes to mind is Harry Potter. I remember being deeply affected by the story. It hooked me from the beginning, by three dimensional characters. I instantly related to Harry and the difficulties he had in school. My heart yearns to read stories that inspire the human mind.
How do you approach cover design?
This is an interesting question. I have studied graphic design in college. I take my cover very seriously in terms of presenting my work to my audience. I ponder the true message of the book and translate it to an image. It is a creative process I truly enjoy.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Since I am religious, the number one choice is "The Book of Mormon" and "Bible." I consider myself an avid Star Wars fan, so I love books about that space opera. My favorite is "Darth Maul, Shadow Hunter." I also love fantasy books from the Harry Potter series, my favorite is "The Deathly Hallows." I absolutely love "The Hunger Games." Finally, I love books about "Dewey Read more Books." since I own three cats of my own, this book touched my soul.
What do you read for pleasure?
Surprisingly, I do not read often. A book has to hook me from the beginning to capture my interests. I have attempted to read many books, but find that I would rather be doing other things. However, once I am hooked on a book I would normally read inspirational stories that capture your heart and mind.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I do not have any preference.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I have had great success with Google + and Twitter. I also love Facebook to get my messages out. I am investigating the possibility of other media at the moment.
Describe your desk
I am an artist so I do have clutter around. However, too much clutter makes me uncomfortable. I attempt to keep thoughts of interests close-by in case I need inspiration.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I was born and raised in Utah to a deeply religious family. This is a very big influence on what I write because, it is part of who I am. I love to connect with people spiritually and emotionally.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing with my wife, Hayley Shaver, a year ago. I always hated writing however, with much convincing, I agreed to help her write a project called "The Caticles." I fell in love with writing. This is now my passion and dream. I love creating stories and characters that means something deeply to people.
What's the story behind your latest book?
"The Unbreakable Will" began as a sequel to my book "The Caticles." It grew into something far more involved. It is a story about a girl who runs from home after the death of her father. She finds living on the streets challenging. She finds help through her best dog friend "Piglet." latter meets a mysterious helpful stranger who she has to learn to trust. Will she overcome her past and trust in faith to solve her problems? You will have to find out.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I love the way I own my books. I control their destiny, not a corporate office.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I love Smashwords. I could not have my dream to write books on my own terms without it.
