Interview with Gerrie Malan

Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
My first co-writing of a book was in a completely different field - that of penology (I was a professional corrections officer).
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
As a professional corrections officer in South Africa, I was asked to co-write a book on penitentiary penology - far removed from the biblical based books I currently co-write with my wife.
How do you approach cover design?
This has been a new field for me and I have purchased some works on the internet to help me. But I certainly focus on a design relevant to the topic at hand, and yet, I also try to do something new. I have used both graphic programs and MS Word.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
I really don't have five favorite books, but spend much time in theological works of past centuries. Modern technology has certainly blessed us with the ability to study or read books we were not able to do so before.
What do you read for pleasure?
At age 67 and with a long list of books to write, my reading (and that of my wife) is mostly focused on the Bible and biblical themes. There is not much time for relaxation reading.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
At the moment I use my laptop computer only, but I must say, the new Kindles seem to be a good reading device. I would probably buy one of them if I felt the need.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I am just getting into this part of the game - and it certainly is a challenge. Hopefully I will master this as well.
Describe your desk
I used to be perfectionist even on my desk (compliments of the uniformed environment of 25 years I guess). Fortunately I have been able to shed much of that. Having moved from a large house to a much smaller dwelling, both my wife and I now use the dining-room table.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in South Africa's Lowveld region (part of the Mpumalanga Province) in the town of Nelspruit. Nobody at the time stimulated any need to write in me then. It is something that developed only as I moved into my fifties.
When did you first start writing?
As far as the theological field is concerned I really got going in 2008. However, the really focused attention developed in 2012.
What's the story behind your latest book?
We grew up in a society that was always somewhat pre-occupied with the so-called end-times. As we studied the Scriptures ourselves instead of blindly following the teachings and sermons of church leaders and televangelists, we came to the conclusion that too many have long ago lost the true contextual meaning in the Scriptures. Through all kinds of philosophical practices they have been adding meaning that was never written. Of course there have been regular end-times frenzies through the years - more than 40 in just my lifetime. My wife and I have grown more and more uneasy with all the artificial and philosophized hype. Our latest book is an attempt to look at the end-times prophecy of Jesus within the context in which it was originally given. It will unavoidably ruffle the traditional hair of many popular end-times advocates.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I first published a book via a publishing company (although they also called it self-publishing). Dissatisfied with their service, I completed an online course in this regard and realized how much money, time and frustration I would have been spared if I had that knowledge in the first place. It was this course, in fact, that made me aware of Smashwords.com. Any new book I take on will follow the indie route.

People have always been intrigued by the soul-spirit concepts. The Bible does not provide clear and precise descriptions. To fill this void Christian teachers and writers have been presenting teaching filled with assumption, philosophising and confusion, albeit clothed in biblical terminology. This book facilitates biblically accurate understanding of these abstract concepts.
