Interview with Sylvia Hubbard

Published 2013-08-21.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Detroit and although it was rife with crime and violence, my mother gave me words of advice. “You can live in this world, but the world doesn’t have to live in you.” With that, she gave me power to choose what affected me and how I was influenced.

Detroit became my world of uniqueness and any Detroiter will tell you, you really have to love this city and all its faults in order to live here. I do and its soul has influence me as a human being, a woman, a mother and especially, as a writer.
What do your fans mean to you?
EVERYTHING! I wish I could write fast enough to please them, but that would mean not sleeping or eating. Well, I wouldn’t mind, but I don’t think I’d live very long.

Hearing someone say, I loved your work, makes me giddy and nervous inside.

Originally, I wrote for me. I know that sounds selfish, but when I received so many rejection notices, I surmised maybe only I liked what I wrote. So I didn’t stop writing and I didn’t stop publishing, but I really thought no one else would like what I was writing. When I posted my book up for sale and got the first Paypal notification I had sold a book at three in the morning that was the best sleep I’d ever gotten. I think I smiled for two days and I didn’t even know who had purchased the work.

Now readers are saying the same thing I’ve said to myself and It’s truly amazing to me each and every time. When they share my work, do a review and even comment on a blog post, I’m honored each and every time because I’m still in a state of “I can’t believe they liked what I wrote” all the time.

By becoming my superfan, I conquered the fear of failure and didn’t give up. I love my fans for their support of all my literary endeavors and I pray I can continue to entertain them for years … or even centuries to come. (I bet Shakespeare thought the same way.)
What motivated you to become an indie author?
1) Rejections

2) I’m a control freak

3) A misunderstand

Like I said, I received a lot of rejections and my dream of becoming published was dwindling my passion for wanting to be an author.

I’m also a control freak. As a single mother, I drive my kids crazy trying to maintain the household. I like things the way I put them and my writing was just as important as my family. I didn’t want to change my characters or storyline. I feel I only understand the meaning to my madness and a big publisher wouldn’t.

The mistake: An author-to-be came to me and heard of this new opportunity to publish for free. She asked me to check it out. I couldn’t understand a lot of the lingo, but I had just completed the book, Dreams of Reality and decided to upload to the site. Two weeks later, I received a paperback book in the mail and a letter with my name on it congratulating me on becoming an author. I almost passed out, but I didn’t and started my journey in the Independent Publishing business.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I’ll be rude and answer a question with a question. How hasn’t Smashwords contributed to my success? Mark Coker really has put together a great website that has given so many authors a chance for success. Not only that, offline, Smashwords has help garner customers I thought I would never reach, especially iBookstore users.

Ever since I signed up in 2009, I’ve been in love with eBooks all over again and I have Smashwords to thank for that.
What are you working on next?
The Hearts. Most of my books contain this volatile family and the next step is to get to what started it all.

My upcoming works will be about the past and how it’s affecting the future of the family.

I praying I can do justice to the Hearts!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Thinking of ideas to write, watching movies, collecting research for what I could possible intertwine in my stories, reading books of fiction and non-fiction and being a full time happily divorced mother of three!
