Interview with I.K. Bartlett

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Africa, Borneo and Europe. The vibrant life and varied lifestyles gave me a love for the history, culture and legends that make up a country. It was this, coupled with a passion for reading that encouraged me to write for myself.
When did you first start writing?
I actually started writing when I was a boy - I'd always have something on the go in one of my journalist notebooks. However, it was when I joined the Army and started deploying to different Operational theatres when my writing really took off. I used it as my down time for an hour, or sometimes, half an hour before bed, to try to relax.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The series I've written - The Crystal Wars - is written so that every two books is the conclusion of its own two-part story. All six are now available and are grouped as follows:
The Demon King - 1. The Power Within. 2. Rise of a Nation.
The Lake of Fire - 1. The Threatened Throne. 2. The Lake of Fire.
A Stolen Soul - 1. The Stolen Throne. 2. Destruction of a God.

Together they take the reader through the adventures, battles and quests that make up The Crystal Wars.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Many years ago I tried to get published in the traditional manner, but was conned by a less than scrupulous agent, so withdrew and just kept writing for fun. However, when I left the Army and became a teacher, I used my work to help with improving the literacy of students from 12 years old to sixteen and they loved it. One particular student continually badgered me to get published; he wouldn't accept that it just wasn't that easy. His response to me was, "You continually tell us to follow our dreams and work for them - why can't you?" This really made me think, so I took the plunge and, on seeing the students' faces when they had a copy in their hands; I decided to continue.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love the impossible. When I write, I lose myself in whichever world I'm in - in the same way I do when reading.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything! I want them to lose themselves in the worlds I create and live them in the same way I do. Even if they only read for half an hour a day, that's thirty minutes their mind is spirited away from life's worries; so, will hopefully help them relax a little and enjoy the escapism in a book.
What are you working on next?
I am currently finishing the third, in a supernatural trilogy set in WW2, which follows Hunter Macenzie from the streets of London, through British Army Officer selection and on to joining an even more secretive agency called Section 13, who have been embroiled in an eons old war with Odessa - an evil organisation set on opening the gates of hell to release Lucifer and his demonic army.
Who are your favorite authors?
My favourite authors are:
Bernard Cornwell, David Gemell, Conn Iggulden, Raymond Feist and David Eddings.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My son, wife and writing all inspire me to get out of bed.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I spend time with my family, work as a teacher, coach sports and train hard when I'm not writing.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
The first story I ever wrote was when I was about seven. It was a detective story, in which my teacher, at the time, told me off for including the lyrics of a song, sung by the main character. When she called in my parents, she admitted the rest was good, but she wanted me to curb my imagination and concentrate on improving my grammar. I just hope my students listen to me more than I did her - imagination is King; everything else can practised, but an imagination needs to be allowed to run wild.
