Interview with Geert van Ieperen

What are you working on next?
A story, a picture, an art piece and a poem.
How do you approach cover design?
It has to show where the book is about. Sure you want that people click on your book, but you don't want to lose potential interested readers. It does not neccesarily have to include your main character, or even take place in your book. most often a scene from the book will do but it may not always be the best possible.
Now I have the luck to be able to draw my own covers, but one may try to find amatures who would do it for the cost of crediting (i do)
What is your writing process?
1) make a scenario. This happens on random insights, but may also be reached by daydreaming
2) make up major events, secondary persons and possibly a plot. If no plot is created, the result is more 'creative' but takes so much more time
3) start playing the story in you head. Maybe this is a gift, but i can lay on the couch all day and 'live' a story
4) write it down. Don't stick to what you made up. keep the story logic and drop all the boring parts.
5) check it, change it. check it yourself and possibly by multiple proofreaders. these are vital if you really want to make quality
the last step takes maybe multiple months, the first three somewhere between a week and a year. This is how I do it, and proboably doesn't work for everyone.
Describe your desk
a mouse, headpones, charger and a hard-disk, all ready to dock on to my laptop when I come home. There are no redundant items on my desk.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
My one favorite book is "making money" by Terry Patchet. You coninuously try to figure out what the main character is thinking. The book is set in a magic medieval world (and you may know I like magic medieval setting) without pushing the plot using magic. Next is a Dutch-only book from 1971 known as "Koning van Katoren". This book has a straight-forward setup where the main character solves 7 + 1 societal problems in a fantasy kingdom. the solutions are creative, the message deep and the story stays funny to the end.

There are many more stories i have read, but I tend to forget them...
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Studying, and spare time is mostly spent drawing
What do you read for pleasure?
comics. Call me a barbarian, but mostly I pick webcomics to read.
Sometimes flash-fiction too.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
mobile phone.
me is poor student
