Interview with L.T. Suzuki

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up just outside the urban sprawl of Vancouver, BC. I'd say where I grew up had less to do with influencing what and how I write than how I grew up. In the 60s & 70s there was still a lot of racism and sexual discrimination, and as I entered the work force, especially in the male-dominated field of law enforcement for a branch of the federal government and in martial arts, these, especially the male chauvinism, was quite prevalent. With the female character in my movie optioned series, some of her actions and reactions were loosely inspired by some of what I've experienced in my life, but of course, my character is much more graceful and tactful in her dealings.
When did you first start writing?
I had a job I loved heading up the education and volunteer department of a local zoo on Feb. 6, 2002. The next day, all of management, myself included were let go. On Feb. 7th, I started writing the first book in the epic adult fantasy Imago Chronicles series.
What's the story behind your latest book?
In this 10th and final novel in the Imago Chronicles series, Nayla and the surviving members of the Order are pitted against an enemy unlike any they had ever encountered. This nemesis comes bearing strange, powerful weapons not even the Wizards know how to combat. To make matters worse, following a trail of chaos and murder committed by this villain with a secret agenda, Nayla's daughter, the young Prince of Carcross and her loyal friend, Joval Stonecroft have vanished.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I never started writing with the intention of becoming a traditionally published author, it's been editors at publishing houses I've met at writers conferences that recommended I get a literary agent and become traditionally published. Since I began writing, I've been represented by two agents, both of whom I've met at one of the most popular writing conferences in North America. No matter how many sales with the Big 5 publishing houses these agents might have, there's still no guarantee your book will be published. As great as your book is, it also comes down to how motivated the agent is to sell. I found the traditional publishing route, even with 'reputable' agents, to be a rather disheartening experience. In fact, I even released my last agent to use a very good entertainment lawyer to negotiate my movie deal. Of course, since the movie-optioning of my 1st three novels, I've had some agents ask that I contact them once film production is underway. But as it is now, I remain an indie author!
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
This year, there were several months where Smashwords sales exceeded those of combined (worldwide) Amazon sales! I think it's important not to let Amazon have a monopoly on my books because not everyone reads from a Kindle and not everyone wants to buy from Amazon! It's important to give book buyers a choice!
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
When fans come back each year to pick up the latest novel or leave wonderful reviews telling me how my books entertained them, making them laugh and cry while they cheered the characters on through their adventures, this is what gives me the greatest joy! In fact, I was only planning on writing 3 novels, but when fans kept asking for the next adventure, I kept writing to keep them happy!
What do your fans mean to you?
My fans are wonderful, loyal readers and, as a writer, this means everything to me! When I can convince a potential buyer to sample the free chapters, the majority of the time, they buy that first novel. Many who buy the first return to buy some or all of the books in the series and some even cross over to my YA fantasy series, The Dream Merchant Saga, just to keep reading until the next Imago book is released! Without these fans telling their friends and family about my books, I'm sure my books would be languishing in a desk drawer, than being read. Bottom line: We are nothing without our readers!
Who are your favorite authors?
My favorite authors also happen to be my favorite writing instructors! I've learned so much from best-selling authors Jack Whyte and father of modern day fantasy, Terry Brooks.
What are you working on next?
I just wrapped up the 10th and final novel in the epic adult Imago Chronicles fantasy series, so I'm going to take a break from writing as we gear up for full film production slated to begin in the late winter of 2013! I've been hired as the creative consultant for the film trilogy, so I'll be busy with this for now and the next little while. If I do find time to write again, I'll work on book 4 of the YA fantasy that I co-write with my lovely teenaged daughter.
