Interview with Peter Ray

Describe your desk
My desk is very untidy, a lot like my mind.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the inner-city of Birmingham, in England. It continues to colour my writing.
When did you first start writing?
My first attempts to write for publication were about twenty-five years ago.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
The first story I wrote for publication was The Housekeeper. I have since published it for the first time, on Smashwords.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords is a terrific platform for launching a new book. Now it is up to me to produce books worthy of my readers.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I found the obstacles to publishing in print impossible, and was convinced there must be another way.
What is your writing process?
Basically, I have to live the story. That is the only way I know to make it believable. Also, of course, it must be enjoyable. I work towards the standard that I myself would look for as a reader.
What do you read for pleasure?
The books I read for pleasure tend to be sort of gritty - whether Bernard Cornwell's historical heroes or Andy McNab's special forces heroes.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
My greatest joy of writing for publication is when I can see that my books are liked and valued. Naturally, the best vote of appreciation is book sales.
What are you working on next?
I have half a dozen titles in development. They grow when I can see a direction for them. They might shrink a little when I edit them. They are complete when I believe people might seriously want to read them.
