Interview with Samson Iyayi

What do your fans mean to you?
I exist for my fans. They are the reason my purpose is being fulfilled daily. They are my reason for being and true service.
What are you working on next?
I just finished my first book for publishing. I am working on a new title which I will begin writing shortly.
Who are your favorite authors?
John Maxwell, Myles Munroe and Rick Warren. I love Eturuvie Erebor's books too.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My purpose; the fact that I need to die empty and the fact that my fans and readers may never find their fulfillment if I fail to fulfill my purpose.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I spend my time reading, meditating or watching a movie. I like being reflective so sometimes I just observe my kids and spouse and take notes.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I research on google or I visit my friend's pages on facebook or their blogs. I also subscribe to a few sites like Authorhouse, New word etc
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I was 11 years old when I wrote my first story. I lost the manuscript however being young and naive. I have written more poems than stories. A couple of years back while at College I wrote a play titled Gutterlove which x-rayed infatuation and romance with college freshmen and women.
What is your writing process?
I journal my thoughts especially when it is a consistent thought. Then I research the topic and make notes. Next, I create an outline and state a timeline to finish my book. I design a layout plan after which I start writing. It works all the time.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
My first story was the story of Joseph in the Bible. I grew up in a faith filled background you see so I just had to read the Bible. Joseph's story was a real experience and it made me start to dream about what I could do with my life. I understood for the first time I existed to fulfill a divine plan because of his story.
How do you approach cover design?
Often, I create a cover using bing templates and then discuss my concept with an artist. Thank God for technology and publishing coys like Smashwords I can do just fine and more.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
They are many and mostly the late Dr. Myles Munroe's books. They are Discovering Your Purpose, Maximizing Your Purpose, Understanding the Purpose of Manhood, Rediscovering the Kingdom and The Fatherhood Principle.
What do you read for pleasure?
Books on kids and Cartoon comic books.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I like the Android pdf. It is easy to use and convenient. The Kindle is good too though I rarely use it.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Most social media platforms like BBM, Facebook and twitter. But I am open to new ideas.
Describe your desk
Book piled and orderly with two laptops and a printer. Talk about a tidy desk!
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
Nigeria is my birthplace and still is where I live. But my writing is mostly influenced by mentors; authors I have read and studied. At other times I draw from my personal experience.
When did you first start writing?
Age 11. Dad noticed my gift and started giving me novels to read of revolutionary writers like Chinua Achebe, Ngugi wa Thiongo and Niyi Osundare.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My book talks about biblical patterns and intentional and deliberate parenting. It explores the theme of biblical patterns in the divine transactions of selecting families on earth to orchestrate God's plan of providing solutions to man-made problems through children. I believe God is still doing this in our generation.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
The need to reach many with the written word was my major motivation. The desire to inspire others to do something meaningful with their lives.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I believe so. It is an amazing platform to network, interact with authors and still smile to the bank! Sometimes I still need to pinch myself about this being a real experience.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The fact that I am to share with someone what I have learned and thus minimize his or her mistakes in life.
