Interview with J. A. Areces

What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The process of developing a thought into a story and experiencing a world unfold with every word that I imagine. It is amazing to allow the imagination to unfold and sometimes just run out of control with events and ideas that somehow just slip into the mind and shows itself without an invitation. It is awesome
What are you working on next?
The second book of the Salem Concord is The Secret Society of Seven Sorcerers. This book takes the reader into the secret Wizardry world with Jesse Alexander as he becomes more involved with Beifar Mahgo as they find that they have to stop Lord Alex from obtaining Lord Bane's crystal ball. I really enjoyed writing this book, because I incorporated Beifar's family which includes his Folk wife and two teenage children. There are more characters and bad guys, of course, but no one as evil as Lord Alex. It seems that he'll stop at nothing to get what he wants, the question is what exactly does he want?
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
My wife reminded me that the first story I ever wrote was another fantasy story that filled up four notebooks written by hand. It was in junior high, and I still have them stored away somewhere.
How do you approach cover design?
Well the cover I created for Interview for a Wizard was inspired by the actual hat rack in my office. I use it for my wizard hat and staff just as portrayed in the book cover. The stand was something my wife found in a garage sale and brought home thinking I would like it. I loved it! I knew immediately what I would use it for. I don't think she expected that it would serve as a wizard's stand, but never the less, it is what it is.
Describe your desk
My desk and my office are crowded with items that help my creativity and spirituality. I thank God for my gift of creativity, and I cover my desk with anything that helps my imagination. So if you visited my office you will find wizard action figures, wide eyed open mouthed castle that lights up at night, protective gargoyles, and one ugly skull that wears a head set to keep out the noise. Around Halloween there is always a pumpkin head to keep me company.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up playing outside everyday and when we rested, we told stories. We would sit underneath a light post and I would draw on the sidewalk with a chalk the stories I heard. The rain always watched it away, It was very creative.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Interview for a Wizard is the introduction to the Salem Concord series. I didn't intend it to be a series. I was challenged by a close friend who I included in the stories as Rob, to participate in the NaNoWriteMo contest. I wrote the story in one month and then I made it available online to see if others liked it without editing it. I received so many emails on how the story was liked, that I played with the idea of writing another, and I did...four more! The Salem Concord was created.
