Interview with Jane E Libeau

When did you first start writing?
I wrote my first poem when I was seven. It was a poem about a frog on a log with a dog, as I recall. My teacher loved it and she laughed so much.
She referred to my poem as a 'nonsense poem'. At first I was upset. I thought she was saying it was nonsense.
She saw my heart break and explained what a 'nonsense poem' was.
She was a great teacher. I believe it was she who first encouraged my writing.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Being able to put my thoughts, opinions and dreams down on paper, and then sharing it. The biggest thrill is when someone I admire, likes what I have created. It's a personal buzz for me.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I really wanted to get my work out there. To have it seen and to maybe get a break someday and write for a living.
Describe your desk
Organised clutter...
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Just the amazing way that I can get my work out there. The world is my oyster in some ways by going through Smashwords.
What do your fans mean to you?
It would mean a lot to have a fan base. Fans are people who like what a person does. It would be a great honor to have that appreciation.
What are you working on next?
Oh, another book of poems and a book of 'Words' more along the line of articles I have written. Some other works of self expression that do not fall into the poetry side of writing. I would love to finish some of my short stories. Shiny things distract me though.
What is your writing process?
I write when I write.
Who or what has influenced your writing?
I think it's pretty obvious really... Women! Women and my own experiences with or without them. My observation of women and reflection of me when I am with them or whatever. Being honest about who I am and how I feel and sharing it with others. Sharing it and getting the positive feed back has a strong impact of my desire to express more.
What do you read for pleasure?
Poetry and people. Watching people stimulates the writing urge. Cafes are great for that. Every day in some way I am moved by what I see, in or from what surrounds me. My imagination is pretty fertile, I don't require a lot of 'encouragement' to write.
How do you approach cover design?
At the moment I draw my own covers for the children's books…
Brendan Murphy has kindly taken some photos for me to use for covers. The beautiful rose is one of his lovely photographs as is the Moon. And I use my own photos for some books. My other covers are semi permanent. Waiting for the right images to show themselves.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
Where I grew up didn't influence my writing at all, being away from that small town, narrow minded environment allowed me to explore who I am and of course be who I am. I don't give credit to the negative aspects of my life, even though they were part of me getting to where I am today.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I have to work in my mainstream job. For now.
Who are your favorite authors?
My most favorite author is Ella Wheeler Wilcox.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
My I-Pad
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I haven't tried anything except self publishing and using the social media to market what I write.Being picked up by a publisher is a dream I hope will one day come true and of course then the marketing is taken care of.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I love my yard. My wee veggie patch and my animals. I enjoy movies and documentaries and anything really on history. And I have a main stream job.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I have been looking for a career. It dawned on me that maybe the career I should be chasing is one that may not make me rich, but will make me happy. I love writing about love, love is a driving force for my creativity. I love writing, it is easy for me to just write. One more book of love is tapping at the 'to be published' threshold.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
I love poetry. My favourite author is Ella Wheeler Wilcox.. her work moves me.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
via recommendation
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
ah yes... The Adventures of Being.. I was living in Australia , South Australia to be precise. A place called Encounter Bay. I wrote the first two Being books there. I loved my life there.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The Faraway forest.. I think... and I loves the dream of being in a forest an being part of life there.
