Interview with Janet Wilson

When did you first start writing?
I started writing in 2007, from a frustration at how few decently written stories there were on the free story sites. The vast majority (with some wonderful exceptions) were plot-less, designed only to get men hot and bothered. There seemed to be a dearth of stories written to appeal to women, or to people that needed good story as an integral part of their enjoyment. I tried to give people something special, and my free site readers seemed to think I had.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I actually have several books that I've written already for the free sites and publishing on a small market specialty ebook retailer. The story I am currently writing (when I'm not getting the finished books formatted for Smashwords) is part three of a science fiction trilogy. I'm still coming up with a name for the series. The three books (Galactic Slave, Galactic Slut, and Galactic Whore) record 1 woman's fight against slavery and a galaxy wide conspiracy. The main character, first as a slave, then as free woman, uses her mind and body to accomplish what she needs to accomplish. Of course, there's a generous dollop of sex with both humanoid and non-humanoid aliens.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Mostly a realization that my graphic and vivid descriptions of sex and BDSM would make traditional publishers avoid my stories like the plague. I found a niche publisher and had some success in my sales, and now am publishing to the larger audience through Smashwords.

If I may, if you are a budding or hoping tobe author, Smashwords is a great way to start and to reach a wide audience, no matter if your books are erotic, traditional fiction, or non-fiction. I highly recomend them.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I don't have a lot of success yet, sales wise, having only published 1 book as of today (more to come). The biggest help they ahve given me is the wonderful guidance on formatting and cover design. Their style manual is one of the best how to manuals I've ever encountered. They are also eager to respond to specific questions for help you might have.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy? Letting the story flow. At times, it seems like the story is using me to be told, rather than me writing the story. I have had characters refuse to go where I wanted the in the plot, instead, going to where they wanted to go. For example, In Valerie's Crisis, I intended for Valerie to fall in love with Charles, but she insisted on falling in love with Sally instead. When that flow happens, everything else fades into the background and I can write for hours and not even realize it.
What do your fans mean to you?
I think of my fans as the most important part of my publishing (free or pro). When I get responses or comments to my stories, I take them seriously. Their criticisms enable to be a better writer, and their praise renews my writing spirit. Without fans, I would have trouble getting up the mojo to write. I still would, as writing is an inherent part of who I am.
Who are your favorite authors?
My favorites change over time, and my inability to remember names well has me at a disadvantage. I love David Weber's Honor Harrington series. I never miss the next Clive Cussler book and have recently discovered Steven Harper's Clockwork Empire novels. Unfortunately, most of my favorite erotica authors aren't publishing anymore. But, Argus and David Jewel are exceptional (I have no idea if they are selling on Smashwords).
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Four things. My partner Deb, my students at the university, my cats, and my stories. Yes, the stories come in fourth, as my living reasons are vastly more important.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Reading, playing Pathfinder or Arkhan Horror (and any number of games). There are several TV shows we enjoy, and of course, I teach. Oh, and cuddling with my partner and my cats.
How do you approach cover design?
I have a concept for the cover and then I use free hoto sights like Flickr, to find images to to create that concept. Smashwords strongly recommends using a professional designer, and I would echo that advise. I can't afford that right now, and am grateful for Deb's intuition with color and appearance.

An example of my design process is creating the cover for Galactic Slut. I knew I wanted the background to be a Susan herself, with smaller shots of the important parts/characters in the story. I needed a shot of Brusjin, a star field, a planet, and one that would give away some important parts of the story. I guess you'll have by the books. :)
What do you read for pleasure?
Oh yes. Science fiction, fantasy, action/adventure and erotica are my top genres. I'm a bus rider (I suck at driving), so a lot of my reading is on the bus. I also read a print book for an hour or so before bed to eind down.
