Interview with Jan Peterson Ewen

What do you read for pleasure?
I love to read female authors with a creative and rich use of language, like Barbara Kingsolver and Anne Tyler. I also love classic authors, especially Charles Dickens, and quirky humorists like Vonnegut and Tom Robbins. All over the board, right?
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I use iBooks and read from my laptop.
Describe your desk
I have a difficult time keeping it in order.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
My father was a minister and he served seven different churches in the Pacific Northwest before I finished High School, so we travelled around. This introduced me to a broad base of experiences and a variety of people that enriched my life.
When did you first start writing?
When I was young I enjoyed writing poetry and song lyrics. My first four published books have all involved writing dialogue and acting scenes for student actors. For most of my life I have been a performer and theatrical director. Writing was kind of a late interest for me. "Starring on Bay Street" is my first novel and I have loved this writing experience. I am looking forward to many more.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book, "Starring on Bay Street", is a story that reflects on my years as the artistic director of a small town, local theater on the beautiful Puget Sound. It is fictionalized, but I drew from my years of unbelievable experiences; the amazing characters I worked with, and the powerful events that changed many lives through the arts.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
After publishing four books through traditional publishing, I decided I would like to have more control over my material - especially when offering bonus materials. I know e-publishing is a growing field and I want to experience sharing my work through this new platform. We'll see how it goes!
