Interview with Janith Hooper

How do you approach cover design?
This was a fun process for me. First, I found an image I really liked, by a great artist. Next, I perused dozens of covers, looking for the ones I really liked. Then, I researched who designed them, and viola. I sent the image to the graphic designer and after three attempts his cover was absolutely perfect.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Heaven, Texas, by Susan Elizabeth Phillips (the author is amazing, and it's a love story between two unlikely people); Betting Hearts, by Dee Tenorio (good writer, and it's a love story about two best friends); Redeeming Love (awesome writer, and it's a Bible-based love story--unusual); Another Dawn, by Sandra Brown (amazing author who isn't afraid to write blatant-life stories, and it's a story about a man who fights against loving a younger woman); The Madness of Lord Ian MacKenzie, by Jennifer Ashley (another great author, and it's about a man who is different, and a woman who understands him).
What do you read for pleasure?
Love stories, of course. :)
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I use a kindle. Love it. Thought I'd never get used to something other than a printed book, but have found I really like having hundreds of books with me at all times.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up on a ranch. I was around animals of all kinds, but horses intrigued me the most. It definitely influenced my love for reading and writing western romance stories.
When did you first start writing?
Funny story; I didn't start writing until all four of our sons were grown and on their own. Most authors start at a very early age. I will say that my imagination started quite early in life, but the writing didn't start until seven years ago when I had fervently prayed and asked the Lord to show me what I was to do next.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I watched an online presentation from a famous author who explained he had turned down a quarter million dollar advance to self-publish. He explained how the traditional publishers no longer did all the work for authors these days, if you were one of the lucky ones to even be noticed. He made a statement, and repeated the statement, that we authors now have the same opportunity to publish indie books as easily as do traditional publishers. And, if we do them ourselves, we make a lot more money.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
To be able to share what God has planted in my brain about the greatest gift He has given to mankind for one another. Love.
What are you working on next?
My second book in the Quaking Heart trilogy, Stay With Me. The first draft is written, so once it's edited I will be able to share it.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords, Mark Coker in particular, has been a great help. It is obvious their interest is in actually helping an author to see their dream come to fruition.
