Interview with J. Vaughn

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
My father was in the navy, so I moved around a lot growing up. I spent quite a few years in Alaska as well before settling down in Seattle. I went to grad school in Manhattan and Germany. All that travel has definitely influenced my writing and allowed me to write with confidence about both wilderness settings and city life.
One of the motifs that often creeps into my stories is the theme of trying to fit in someplace new or with others who are very different. One thing you will never see me do is to have characters instantly learn a foreign language. I like to have them struggle with communication as so often happens in real life even when you do speak the same language. Cultural contrasts fascinate me as well. They can be anything from the difference between growing up rich or poor, growing up religious or not, or growing up halfway across the globe speaking a different language.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I used to browse the best sellers at wherever I was buying my book. That was hit or miss for me, though. What is selling well now, are not necessarily the best books in class, and sometimes the choices were less than stellar. What is selling well is also not always what’s highest rated, sometimes the highest rated books are the ones with very few ratings.
Lately I’ve had good luck using the lists at Goodreads. There’s quite a few in the M/M category and they have some great books in them.
What do you read for pleasure?
Lately I've been reading almost exclusively M/M romance, but I also love sci-fi and fantasy.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I do everything on my MacBook Air. It's small and light enough to carry around with me, but has a full keyboard and screen. I do everything on this little machine. It's been stolen twice and both times I've replaced it (on credit -- ulp!) within 24 hours -- I was having withdrawals.
I read in PDF format if possible because it usually the most visually pleasing--epub and mobi format are not really designed for layout. I also like having actual page numbers rather than percent-read or some other mechanism and I much prefer a vertical scroll.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Hah! So far nothing. I'm getting ready to try giving a bunch of copies away for free to see if I can generate some buzz. When you read this, feel free to contact me and request your free copy. You can find my email address from my author webpage link. Just mention that you read my interview on Smashwords and let me know which book and what format you prefer and I'll send it right on.
