Interview with J.D. Stark

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up on a small farm in Carthage, Missouri. I tell people often that I grew up on a 3.5 acre farm with a garden that was ten acres when you had to pull weeds from the green beans. A few cows, chickens and a German Shepard dog named, Pepi made our farm just perfect for growing up.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
It was for an assignment in Mrs. Sneed's class in the sixth grade at Hawthorn Elementary School in Carthage, Missouri. A great little story about two boys that had spent the summer on a small lake near there home. Each day they would go canoeing with a little fishing along the way. They discover a secret cave and it becomes their summertime hideout.
What is your writing process?
I write mostly from experience. I have been blessed to have worked in several different fields in my life and am able to share those well traveled roads with my readers. I try to write each day even if what I write ends up in the round file cabinet, or as the film maker would say on the cutting room floor. I am always jotting down ideas and thoughts. Outline, outline, outline!
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The Hardy Boys were my heros!
What are you working on next?
In the works is a series of books based on a character I call Ralston. He is a seasoned police detective that struggles with real life issues while solving crimes in a small town in southwestern Missouri. In the first book of the series we will meet Ralston and his family both at home and and work and watch as he solves a rare murder case in his small department. In the second installment we will watch as Ralston's life is destroyed by a series or events that will make your head spin. Finally we will watch as Raslton recovers and changes his life in the third installment. I am excited to get these stories on paper for your enjoyment.
Who are your favorite authors?
John Grisham, Lee Child, James Patterson, Stephen King, John Sanford and so many more I enjoy reading!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
If I'm not writing I am usually at work, the job that pays my bills, as a respiratory therapist. If I am not doing that and have taken a moment or two away from writing I will spend time with my children, Samuel and Brianna and my wife Jewelia. I will also try to fit in some time for my favorite hobby, shooting guns!
