Interview with Jean-Renaud Cherubin

What motivated you to become an indie author?
I started many businesses in my life and some have failed and some never got off the ground like I wanted them to. The day I found an online business model that worked for me, I was so excited that I needed to share it with everyone I knew. Then I found out thats not enough people, I started writing a little 50 page insert to pass around. It turned into a 200 page story of my life story of trials and tribulations and in turn it became a great book story to tell. Big house publishers didn't give me the time of day. One year later I used my online business tactics found in my book for my book. And Indie was the way to go. I have a chapter called. AEIOU; Amazingly Everything Is Online, Universally. I followed my own teachings and it lead me to finding everything can be done online, even publishing and marketing a book. I love this tech stuff.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Knowing that the day before was just a stepping stone. I knew nothing the day before. I am closer to The Almighty every day He says 'get up my child and try again.' Traditionally this answer might be family and getting goals done, which is true. but it fails in comparison to how you were granted one more day!
What do your fans mean to you?
A worldly connection that breaks the borders of my town and state. Online fans are the best. All these like minded people are awesome. Those are the people I wrote for and oddly enough they are the ones that I connect with. Feels great, makes me want to help even more people.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
The first story I ever wrote for pure enjoyment instead of school assignment was in 5th grade. I used all of my classmates names in some style, words that sounded like their last names. Everyone loved it to my surprise. I read it to everyone right before lunch. It only made sense, I had people in my class with last names like, Price, Byington, Lovas and Tillman.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Besides writing my own first book which I love to dear, others before me were the greats. Some of my favorites include but not limited to any list I have 20 or more faves. Here are a few.

Rich Kid, Smart Kid by Robert Kiyosaki. My generation never really learned about finances and how they affect your whole future. My race even suffers from financial awareness. So it starts with the children. I preach financial awareness early.

The Lawyer, John Grisham. I read a book where the lawyer was in Italy. His writing focused on the beauty of Italy as if it was one of the characters. I will never forget the image he put in my brain. Till this day it is in my brain as words then the pictures of the words are displayed. Meaning unlike TV watching your brain puts viewed item first, words are an after thought, and the brain doesn't need to grow its gigabytes, like reading does.

Tao of Jeet Kung Do- by Bruce Lee. I am into health and longevity and that book shows the Arts in a new light. I love the fact that they are his own hand written notes and drawings. I feel connected to him as I read and practice his moves.

Freedom for Sale- John Kampfner. The world is summed up in this book. I love history and this book is a mention of future history through current worldly situations about the spread or lack of democracy.

Think and Grow Rich- N Hill.. The first word in that title is the most important word I ever heard of.
What is your writing process?
I have a unique writing process. I find inspiration in life. I mix whatever it is I am doing at the time. I started my own business so my last two books are about entrepreneurship and recently went to a top management training course to 9-5er's career development and realized the ideas expressed there are not really being followed by people, so I mixed my entrepreneur spirit and love for self help and I am in the process of writing a career advancement book. Once I have an idea. I sometimes use an outline. I still like pen and paper. Takes a little longer but its worth it, I just focus on typing to complete the book, edit and print. Where ever I am in life is what I write about if it helps others I will write about it.
How do you approach cover design?
Cover design is by far the hardest thing for me to do. But I still refuse to pay for it. As a self publisher there are too many resources available to me to not try it on my own. I realize how important it is to have a great marketing cover. I am getting better.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Face to face and putting the face to face video online to connect even more.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Im smashing them out here with smashwords. They saved me so much time and aggravation and taught me so much about the indie publishing game. I love them for it. I even professionally edited my book into a great e-version for the premium service.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I have an Ipad.
What are you working on next?
I am working on 2 things. A book about 9-5er's and their career advancement styles. I am also working on an original movie script. I fell in love with my writing so I am writing in different realms. Expand my comfort zone.
