Interview with J.E.B. Spredemann

When did you first start writing?
My love of writing began in elementary school. I remember being really excited when the teacher announced we would be completing a writing assignment, especially if it was a short story. I believe I was in the 6th grade when I penned my first love story.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in California, which is funny since I write Amish fiction. I don't know if there has ever been Amish people living in California; according to my research, the majority reside in PA, OH, and IN. California does play a part in my writing, though. Danika, the main character in 'Danika's Journey' (which is FREE, by the way) is from California. The state is also visited by characters in 'An Unforgivable Secret'.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book is 'Learning to Love - Saul's Story', and is a sequel of sorts to 'Chloe's Revelation'. Saul's book is definitely a love story and is written for a decidedly adult readership, as it deals with marital issues (still clean and Christian, of course). I put my heart into every book I write, but I can especially relate to Chloe. She is one of my favorite characters, and I felt the story line needed to continue. When 'Chloe's Revelation' ended, readers were left with a satisfying conclusion to Chloe's story, but not Saul's. Saul was left with a buggyful of trials. And even though Saul seems like a bit of jerk at the onset (one reader said she wanted to smack him upside the head, lol), as Saul learns to love, the reader learns to love and appreciate Saul. Those who have read this book said they laughed, cried, and even cringed at some points. I hope 'Learning to Love' will become a favorite for you as well. If you haven't read the 'Amish Girls Series', be sure to get the edition that includes 'Chloe's Revelation'! (You'll be happy to know that there isn't much cost difference, if any.) You can find a copy here: http://www.amazon.com/Learning-Love-including-Chloes-Revelation-ebook/dp/B00JMS19X8/ref=la_B00AB4BTUU_1_14?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1402581800&sr=1-14
What are you working on next?
I have three projects due for release the remainder of this year (2014): the highly-anticipated third book in the 'Amish Secrets' series, 'A Secret of the Heart'; a Christmas book with characters from the 'Amish Girls Series', and book 2 in my 'Amish Fairly Tales' novelette series. If you haven't read any of these series yet, please do so. By the grace and goodness of God, my ratings average in the 4-5 Star range, so it seems readers have been satisfied. I value my readers' time, so I do my best to put books out there that you will enjoy - that I myself, as a reader, would love. If you purchase a book and don't feel like it was good investment, please get a refund. But I sincerely hope that you will read and love each book.
Are your books connected? Which book would you recommend reading first?
So far, every book I've written is related. The 'Amish Girls Series' (co-authored with my teen daughters) is the foundation of all the books so, even though it's a teen series, I recommend beginning with those. Every reader I've heard from, who has read the series in its entirety, has said they thoroughly enjoyed the series, and the characters felt like they'd become family. Some of the characters from that series are parents of the charcters in the adult books. And, of course, there's Jonathan Fisher! Oh my! :) http://www.jebspredemann.com/#!jonathan-fisher/c1j0f
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When I'm not writing, I enjoy reading, spending time with family and friends, and I love to observe God's magnificent creation - whether it be a sunset over the hills, the different faces of the sky, or fireflies dancing in the field across the street.
Who are your favorite authors?
God is my #1 favorite author - the Creator of all good things, including language and literature.
In regard to fiction, I enjoy reading (& writing!) books that not only tell an interesting story, but touch my heart, and uplift God and His Word. I love reading Amish Christian fiction and my favorite authors in the genre are Cindy Woodsmall and Kelly Long, although I've enjoyed most of what I've read from other authors as well. I don't like filler and fluff, as I'm sure my readers have already gathered. I like to fill in the details with my own imagination (or if I'm writing, allow my readers to), not have them explained page by tedious page. I want an engaging story that I can't (or certainly don't want to) put down.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I find most of my ebooks through word of mouth, Amazon recommendations, Facebook, and Goodreads. I try to keep up with my favorite authors by checking their websites.
How do you approach cover design?
I enjoy designing book covers, and I aim to make my covers as professional as possible. However, I am limited by several factors, including graphic design knowledge (praise the Lord for Youtube tutorials), cover models, and time restrictions. I will eventually probably hire a professional designer, if I feel it's necessary.
Describe your office now. What does your dream office look like?
Since we recently moved across the country, I am without an office at present. My former office (a small room apart from the house) consisted of a couch, a lap desk, and my laptop. I also had a small fridge for power snacks and a small library of reference books. My dream office is a small cottage (yes, I already have a picture of it) where I can have total quietness. Living in a family of eight, quiet time is precious and few. I usually find my best writing hours after the family has gone to sleep.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Hmm...the greatest joy. I would have to say feedback from my readers is my greatest joy. It's one thing to write a book. It's another thing to have someone not only read and enjoy your book, but to hear them say that your book touched their heart, challenged their thinking, or encouraged them in their walk with God. It is something I only could have hoped for. So if there is someone out there reading this, who has been touched by the words or actions of another, please let them know. We never know what kind of power our words hold, whether they are negative and discouraging or positive and edifying. That's one reason why Psalm 19:14 (KJV) has become one of my life verses. 'Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer.'
