Interview with Jeffrey Thompson

What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I think the best part of writing is actually watching someone else enjoy the work I've produced. To see their expressions or reactions to the scenes as they unfold, or even while they are talking about them; just awesome.
What are you working on next?
Currently I am still working with the Axe on its quest and beyond. That's all I'm saying for now.
What is your writing process?
First comes the idea. Then concepts of the characters that are going to live, die or whatever happens to them, through that idea.
Next, I will make an outline. Yes that fun task that everyone loved in high school. Then comes the complete character creation. I like to know as much as I can about most of the characters in my stories. Now it is time to begin the first daft. After the characters mess with my outline, and I redo it a couple of times and proceed in the normal taking of Advil to dull the headache, the first draft should be complete. The next step is writing the finished version. This is usually where I remember things I wanted to add but didn't, so the characters start arguing with me again and send me back to make another outline.
Then ta-da, a book is born.
Who are your favorite authors?
Of course J.R.R. Tolkien, Michael Moorcock, J.K. Rowling. Just to name a few.
Describe your desk
Imagine an organized pile that truly only I understand mounding across the dark wood grain and pressing against a lamp in the corner nook; and then add a cat resting comfortably in the midst of it all.
What's the story behind your latest book?
You know I would like to answer this question, in about a year and a half.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When I'm not writing, I am doing my artwork. My wife recently gave me a Wacom Intous. Usually however, the art reflects something in my writing; characters, cities, maps, etc.
