Interview with Jeff Woodward

What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy of writing is being able to create a character, scene, plot, etc. in a world that only limited by your imagination.
What are you working on next?
I am currently working on a Cold-War semi-autobiographical memoir, relating the experiences of a young soldier who was responsible for the maintenance and assembly of nuclear warheads at the age of 18.
Who are your favorite authors?
Robert E. Howard, the creator of Conan and the father of sword and sorcery tops the list. Others include Anne Rice, H.P. Lovecraft, Jack Kerouac and the ancient writers Herodutus, Caesar and Tactitus.
What is your writing process?
I begin kicking around the basic plot of a yarn in my head. I'll let it stew and boil for week, weeding out scenes and words I think do not belong there. I then begin to write it, editing as I progress. Once the final draft is complete, I re-read the whole story, and correct as needed.
What do you read for pleasure?
I must have read Caesar's The Gallic Wars 20 times. The stories from ancient Rome and Greece are unsurpassed in drama, and the Annals of Imperial Rome by Tacitus has more intrigue and danger in the Roman imperial court than anything an author could come up with today.
