Interview with Jenn Hype

Published 2019-02-15.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The book I'm working on currently is actually kind of a secret project. A reader's fiance contacted me and asked if I would consider writing a character based off his fiancee as a birthday gift to her. The idea intrigued me and as I got to know their story through him I decided to write a book loosely based on them. It's been an interesting process and I hope my reader will be pleased with the surprise!
What motivated you to become an indie author?
One of the first indie authors I ever read was NA Alcorn, who now publishes under a different pen name. At the time I'd been reading more traditional authors and her book was like a breath of fresh air. The rigidity and formality wasn't there. It was fun and creative and so funny. It was the first time I thought to myself, "Holy crap! Maybe I could do this!" I will forever credit her books for inspiring me to take that first leap.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
OMG SMASHWORDS, how I love thee. Smashwords is hands down the best distributor to work with. They make everything so easy and are so amazing with their support. If I have an issue with a book, they help immediately and do everything they can to fix things. I literally could not do this without Smashwords.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
If you mean in general, then no! I loved to write from a really young age and wrote short stories often. However, the first story I ever wrote for publication was Pressing Adalyn, my first book!
What is your writing process?
I don't know that I have a "process" really. I come up with my ideas randomly. Lots of them are inspired from music or my own experiences. I plot a little but am definitely more of a "pantser" when it comes to writing.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The first novel I remember reading in school that made a big impact on me was The Giver. The first romance novel I read on my own was A Walk To Remember by Nicholas Sparks. I read it when it first came out, long before his books were really famous like they are today. It was really touching and I read it dozens of times.
How do you approach cover design?
I lucked out in this department. My husband is a web design tech developer person guy. (I never know how to describe what he does for a living.) Basically though I give him an idea of what I like or examples of other covers I find appealing and he brainstorms. He's a genius when it comes to such things!
What are your five favorite books, and why?
This question is just mean! It'd be easier to say who my top 5 authors are. Maybe. That'd still be a difficult one. The first book that always comes to mind if someone asks me what is a book I love is Hooked On The Game by CM Owens. I've read that book at least 10 times. That entire series is amazing.
What do you read for pleasure?
Romance!! Though I prefer the humorous kind and try to avoid too much angst. Real life is depressing enough. I like to have an escape from sad realities when I read and want to be uplifted. That's why I make sure all my books have humor, even when they also include sad parts.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I do almost all my reading on my Macbook. I prefer to use Apple Books but end up using the Kindle app a lot more because of book availability.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up, and still currently live, in Southwest Ohio. I don't know that my geographical location influenced my writing too much, though. I'm surrounded by creative people and my mother is a good writer so that definitely had a big impact on me.

It doesn't matter that I can't remember anything. In fact, the more I remember, the worse it gets. The only thing I know for certain anymore is that someone from my past wants my past to stay buried, even if it takes burying me right along with it.
