Interview with Jennifer Yap Caspe

What's the story behind your latest book?
The Dog That Followed Me Home was inspired by an event that happened in 2004. In a funk, I took a walk outside and met this very loyal stray dog who adopted me. The dog was smelly, mangy and must have received much ire because of its appearance, but it had enough love in its heart to attend to me. It must have felt that I was lonely and needed company so it followed me along, even if I tried to drive it away. "Is this dog a real dog or an angel in disguise?" I kept asking myself. When I reached home, I decided to feed the dog. Then, I asked it to wait for me as I ran to the house to get my cameraphone. I was able to take a picture of it before it ran away. I never saw the dog again. The memory of that event lingered so much so that 10 years later, I decided to turn the story into a picture book for my 3-year-old daughter.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I am too attached to this story to sell it to a commercial publisher. ;-)
What are you working on next?
My book The Boy With One Hand will be released in a month or two. I also have another storybook in the works entitled Scotty The Lopsided Cottage and then there is Fizzy The Firefly. All my books are inspirational. I want kids to feel loved, appreciated and empowered when they read my books.
