Interview with Jennifer Welsh

What is your writing process?
I carry around a little notebook in my purse to jot ideas down throughout the day. I usually don't get a chance to write until the evening.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I love to spend time with my family, going to movies, and traveling. Key West and Disney World are a couple of my favorites. I just recently started a blog about a fictional place where teenagers have special abilities that have to be hidden. It is just for fun and called Indigo Blue Running Script.
How do you approach cover design?
I wanted a dark wintery design to depict the mood of the story.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
I love Sharp Objects. At this time it is my favorite book. The characters are so interesting and have a lot of depth to them. I was captivated from beginning to end.
What do you read for pleasure?
I love books by Sue Grafton, Jonathan Kellerman, Patricia Cornwell, and Gillian Flynn.
Describe your desk
My desk is cluttered with papers and little notes with story ideas.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Plainville, Indiana. Most of my stories have a rural Indiana setting.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love creating the characters and the world they live in.
What do your fans mean to you?
When I have some fans, I will love them. They will mean the world to me.
What are you working on next?
I am working on a book about a young woman who is traumatized by a childhood friend, her first love, getting murdered. I am also working on a young adult novel about an island where children grow up with special powers.
