Interview with Jesse Walter

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I was an army brat. I was born in Michigan, but laid my head in a lot of places. In this I was exposed to a large variety of local cultures, and good amount of history. This has given me the deep desire to gather stories. It has established a certain sense of value in life experience in me. I believe firmly that he who dies with the most toys, still dies, and when I am in Valhalla, it will be stories that I know will be brought with me.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing in Junior High. I wrote graphic novels, poetry, but it was not until a few years ago that I started writing a blog. The blog awoke a passion in me. Story after story moved my fingers. I was writing short stories, and eventually a novel or six. I just love nothing more than to sit at the keyboard and click away.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I am a Heathen, practitioner of the ancient beliefs of my ancestors. I am a citizen soldier. It just kind of made sense, and I saw a need to put it out there.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I am not in this to make money, but a looking to vent my ideas. So publishers of the traditional sense do not offer that kind of practice. You have to be marketable for them to take you seriously, and many times they want to know you have been tested before. They are not as in love with risk as I am.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Well they got me out there for the world to see. What else do you need to say. Thank you Smashwords.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
It helps me get my thoughts straight and defines my character. In putting words to paper you find that all these lose ideas we have in our head take a shape that is much more defined. In essence, writing has helped me define me.
What do your fans mean to you?
They are my extended family. Family to me is everything.
What are you working on next?
I am going to revise Warrior Spirit, and then move into publishing my fiction works. I am thinking I will primarily work on Smashwords, even if I do become successful in other venues.
Who are your favorite authors?
Orson Scott Card, Glenn Cook, Issac Asimov, Ayn Rand, to name a few. I could type all day. Reading has always been a passion of mine.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I love my job. I love seeing daisies from the top. Not looking forward to pushing them up.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Mostly in self gratification.

This guide is more of a way of coming to terms with being a modern warrior in today's culture, and really about dealing with conflict in a passive community. I am a Heathen myself, favoring the Norse path with a heavy eastern influence. By using my own experiences as a combat veteran, and a very active member of my community, I am attempting to fill a void.
