Interview with Jessica E. Larsen

When did you first start writing?
I started writing poems very early in my childhood—I think when I was about 7 years old, all the way to my teens. Then, after a chance encounter with a romance pocketbook, I become an avid reader and started writing in my notebooks as a hobby. It was around 2006 that I took my passion of writing fiction seriously.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I think starting and finishing a novel is the most thrilling, but what I love best is when unexpected things and little details suddenly pop into my mind while I'm writing. It's always exciting and challenging to stray from the original plot line or written bullet points. Though that could also lead to a major writer's block, overcoming it is the greatest joy and, of course, the thought that someone would be reading it.
What do your fans mean to you?
They mean a lot to me. There will be no writers if there are no readers. They are my treasure, like irreplaceable friends.
What is your writing process?
I sometimes just sit and start writing based on an idea; some other times, I write the whole synopsis first, and other times, I create a bullet point list and keep adding to it while I'm writing. It's really dependent on my mood. However, most of the time I create the summary and start writing from there. I also carry a small notebook and a ball-point pen when I go out so that I can write down whatever inspiration comes to me at any time.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Ah... I seriously don't know, haha :D The first stories I wrote were in Filipino language and I only submitted them in writing groups. But looking back, I guess I decided to self-publish thanks to one Philippine publisher rejecting my manuscript because the hero is not an "ideal man" due to his past and bad reputation. And, of course, the feeling that I'm the one in control of my book.
What are you working on next?
Oh, I just finished my latest fantasy/paranormal manuscript, titled Fumes Variola, so I think I'll get busy with editing it and finding an editor. Then I think I'll start writing a sci-fi story or another romance fantasy story. I'm still not sure.
How do you approach cover design?
I design my own covers and I create an illustration or buy images that I feel would fit best in the story. I focused on creating a cover that best fits the overall message of my writing.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
It has greatly contributed to my success. I'm not earning enough that I could quit my day job, but I feel that so far, Smashwords is the best e-book publishing platform.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Lazing around, take pictures or reading. I love to read different genres of books and review my favorites, though I also review the ones I hate most, pointing out why I don't like it and such. However, I only blog about those that I have rated 3 out of 5 stars and higher. I also enjoy creating digital art, mostly images that I imagine from stories.
I also like spending my time reading manga or watching shonen anime (my top favorite is Yuyu Hakusho) and watching sci-fi, action, and rom-com movies. Sometimes I just surf around on the internet, reading whatever article, from herbal recipes to answering silly quizzes.
What do you read for pleasure?
I enjoy reading all genres except vampire romance (though at some occasion I make an exception).
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Yes, I do. It was a fictional story about a boy and his dog and how the dog saved him even though it endangered the dog's life. It was such a memorable story for me and made me love animals more than I already did (though cats are my favorite animal), but I'm not sure it made much of an impact on my writing, other than that I tend to include animals in my stories.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
By friends' recommendation and Goodreads, review requests on my blog, reading other blogs, newsletters, book tours, or sometimes just by searching the internet for the genre I'm currently interested in reading.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I have an android that I used for reading online stories, but I guess my favorite is Kindle Paperwhite.
Describe your desk
It's messy most of the time, but I prefer that no one else cleans it because it's an organized chaos that only I understand.
