Interview with Jessica Wilde

Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, it was a paranormal romance about a woman who moves to a new town and meets a stranger who is more than he appears to be... and I remember writing it late at night in secret so no one would see me. I was so scared that someone would read it and make fun of it so I deleted it off of the computer and never went back to it. I hand wrote some of it when I had started and still have the ideas written down. It's several ideas down the line for what I will work on next and I'm really excited to complete it.
What is your writing process?
When I come up with an idea, I write down the main points of the story, what I want to happen, the characters and their descriptions, and then I just sit down and start. I have started outlining more and it keeps the writing more organized, but I mostly just start typing as the story comes.
A lot of the time, I wake up in the middle of the night with an idea for a scene and have to immediately write it down. Then I'll put it together as I get to that point in the story.
For the Brannock series, each story line hit me all at once and now it's just a process to get in all the details.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I do remember the first Romance I ever read. It was Return to Red Castle by Dorothy Keddington. The love story hit me so hard and it was so well written that I actually felt like I was a part of their story. That's when the Romance genre really peaked my interest and every since then, it's been the bulk of what I read.
I later found out that I am actually distantly related to the author but have never had the pleasure of meeting her.
I love every single one of her stories and Return to Red Castle is still sitting on my bookshelf and I have re-read it countless times along with her others including Flower of the Winds and The Mermaid's Purse.
How do you approach cover design?
I look through thousands of stock photos!!
I have ideas of what I want the cover to look like and I browse for hours if I have to until I find the perfect fit. I am still branching out with cover design, but once I come up with an idea, nothing and no one can change it and next to the writing of the story, it's the most important task for me and it's so exciting to see the final product.
Describe your desk
Empty Peace Tea cans, Fruit by the Foot wrappers (until my husband comes and cleans it up for me because he can't take it anymore haha) My notebooks with all my ideas and quick notes that I wrote down in the middle of the night or when I was away from my computer, sticky notes, a marker board calendar, copies of all of my books... It's not too messy, but I'm working on getting it more organized.
Oh, and whatever I have taken away from my daughter for the day because she wouldn't stop playing with it, like a stack of blank DVD's or the stapler or markers :)
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I spend all my free time with my little girl and my husband. He has been the biggest help for me as I've started publishing my books. He has come home from a long day of work and taken over with his Daddy duties immediately so I can spend some time writing. He's very supportive and I like to spend as much time as I can with him.
My little girl is hilarious and likes to play outside a lot so when I can, we go for picnics and play with our dog or play in the dirt, whatever makes her smile.
I also spend a lot of time reading, but that's mostly when everyone else is settled and in bed or when we just have a lazy day.
What do you read for pleasure?
Romance! A good love story will stick with me for a long time. I love Contemporary, Historical, Suspense, Paranormal... pretty much anything that has a love story woven in somewhere.
