Interview with Jill Sinclair

Published 2015-08-31.
When did you first start writing?
I first started writing when I was in high school and really loved being able to be creative and make words come to life. I started writing poetry, short stories, scripts for music videos and took journalism courses.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
The freedom to develop my own audience and people who really care and interact. I've been in social media since the early days and I believe in its' power to connect. Also, E-Books are where it's at, it's where the eyes are going so I believe all authors need to adapt too!
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
The people behind the curtain at Smashwords have been infinitely helpful. As a creative person and an author I do what I call the fun stuff and have no idea about the background formatting and such. It's so great to be able to count on the team to get my book out to the masses! :o)
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
To share my experiences with people, because to keep them all in my head would just be selfish!
Also, when I write it's a freedom of thoughts and words that come rushing out in torrents as my fingers dance on the keyboard. True bliss!
What do your fans mean to you?
My fans and my readers mean the world to me! I want to hear your thoughts, I want to engage you in some plot options for my next books. How fun will that be?
Without an audience I would still create but the fulfillment of entertaining people and bringing them vicariously into my adventures would be gone.
What are you working on next?
I'm working on two books right now. The first is the adventure that carried on after Malaysia into Thailand, then Japan. I'll tell you, those are two vastly different countries and you'll never believe the trouble I got into. Not that I meant to! Jeesh! Transvestites and seedy underworld Eastern Europeans seemed to populate Thailand while Opium and the Iranian dealers that came with that, were just a normal occurrence in my travels in Japan. You'd think that I would have learned my lesson about the dangers in travelling to unknown places, but oh, no, not Miss Fancy!
The other book I'm working on is my adventure driving across the continent from Vancouver way down to Texas. You'd think that would be a pretty normal trip wouldn't you? There was nothing normal about it. Grasshoppers the size of small dogs, random cattle rustling with a black Honda, Texans charming the pants off...oh, you'll have to wait for that!
Who are your favorite authors?
I like Wally Lamb, James Patterson & Daniel E Craig for starters.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My love for my next adventure! Whether it's meeting a stranger on the seawall and agreeing to be their running tour guide to befriending a fella who's the tour manager for Metallica and getting backstage passes. My life is randomly-on-purpose awesome!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
With my honey, my friends, sipping wine, eating delicious nosh, going for runs, walks, playing tennis, writing, painting, designing furniture, planning parties.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
The first story I ever wrote was about a teenage Italian boy who was getting in with the wrong crowd. I guess I've always liked Italian men! Anyways, it was based on a boy I had met when I went on a trip to Calgary and drew some of the similarities into my story. I wrote it in Creative Writing in grade 11 and got an A+ on it!
What is your writing process?
Unleash the hounds! Some writers call it stream of consciousness writing but my style is more edited as I go. Just like my home, I don't like things out of place there and I don't write what I don't want to be in the end product. Does that make sense?
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Flowers in the Attic and it scared the crap out of me! I guess I learned that words can come to life and create a temporary reality in your head and make you feel a certain way when it's done right.
How do you approach cover design?
I knew the design in my head about 10 pages into writing it. Since it was my first book I had a few people say, don't put the cart before the horse - you don't have to think about the design yet. I thought, why not? I knew I was going to finish my book and I wanted my design to be fun and quirky just like me! I found the most fabulous graphic artist online and BAM. She did good! I will definitely use her for all my book covers. What do you think about my cover?
Describe your desk
White with splashes of colour in my fresh flowers.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Pirates, Snakes, Sharks and Miss Fancy is based on REAL events in my life. I KNOW! Crazy eh?
On my adventure into Malaysia, I really did come across pirates, snakes and sharks. It was one wild ride and I sure hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it. I'm busy writing about more of my life's' adventures to share with you!
