Interview with Jim Hamilton

What do your fans mean to you?
They are the reason I write. There seems no point in writing for the sake of it. If people don't enjoy it, it serves no purpose.
What are you working on next?
I am working on a further Inspector Carlos Rico novel. It is about a kidnapping and is once again based around Alicante. It isn't as gory as 'Alicante', that one was extreme.
Who are your favorite authors?
J.G. Ballard has been my greatest influence, though George Orwell, HG Wells and Damon Runyon have amused me over the years. Modern authors I like are Stuart McBride, Val MacDermaid and Ian Rankine.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Life. There is so much to live for. Take all of the positives and gorge yourself on them. They are freely available for everyone. Take a walk, eat something nice, drink too much wine: whatever tickles your fancy.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I teach English to the local population in rural Spain, work on my own Spanish and love to play guitar or keyboard with friends. I am learning to play piano but have realized that this is where real music begins. Do I read? Seldom.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Sometimes by recommendation, but I mostly follow authors I like and know.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Not really. My head has always been full of words and I made my debut into writing by drafting speeches. Burns supper Immortal Memories were a specialty. Dystopia was in my head for a long time and writing it had a purgative effect..
What is your writing process?
Slap an outline onto paper, usually twenty chapters, though the book will take a life of its own if it has any worth. Thereafter, develop the characters and they will dictate how the book turns out. I have been very surprised where some of my books have taken me, sometimes far removed from the original concept. When asked about my books, I sometimes have to defer to the superior knowledge of the person who has just read it: my head is now in what I am writing, not what I have written.
How do you approach cover design?
I try to find something that is catchy whilst reflecting the theme of the book. Eye candy is important.
Describe your desk
Organized, with hints of chaos. I have images of my main characters on the wall above my desk so as I can refer to them in moments of bemusement. I can look out of my window and watch the birds and squirrels sparring, while drinking copious amounts of tea. I make a sheet for each character and for the twists in the plot but my books never work out as planned. Additionally, in moments of indecision I drag out my guitar and bash out bad punk rock. It doesn't help my writing but it feels good.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Emptying my head. Thoughts build up and take strange directions if you don't vent them. Writing brings freedom from your internal demons. I would like to add that I don't actually have a Raul Berbegal inside.
