Interview with Jimi Akanbi

What inspired you to start writng?
Unlike many authors, I never knew I had the gift of writing in me. Although, what I do know was scoring "A" grades in writing research papers both in undergraduate and graduate school. I was a very good athlete growing up. I ran 100 meters, 200, meters, 4 by100 meters and participated in long and high jump in my elementary, middle and high school. That said, I strongly believed that I would grow up to be a professional sportsman. However, many years ago, God revealed to me that He has given me divine wisdom which I would use to counsel His people. Suddenly and miraculously, the inspiration to write actualized.
What is your writing process?
I do not write as I desire, I write as I am led by God. He instructs me when it's time to write. I pray and the words drop from Heaven. I do very little research when writing as I am led divinely and not naturally.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The first story I read was in a book called, "The Battlefield of the Mind" by Joyce Meyer. This book was given to my wife and I as a gift. It came just on time because at the time I was going through some challenges which the book addressed. As I read and practiced the steps in the book, I became free of all the issues in a matter of a couple weeks.
How do you approach cover design?
There is a popular adage which says, "never judge a book by its cover", but in all honesty, most readers judge books by their covers, particularly fiction books. I look at book covers of similar bestselling books and ask my designer to out do those.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
The Battlefield of mind, Become a Better You, The Believer's Authority, Understanding Divine Direction and Your Best Life Now. This is so because these books have helped me grow much and have given me the most impact. They are very instructional and a great additive for others who have not read a Bible.
What do you read for pleasure?
I sometimes read the news with a focus on politics, economy, celebrities, and current affairs. I also read Christian books.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
iPad or personal computer.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
The most effective book marketing has been reducing the price of my book for a short time and advertising it in some bargain book promotion sites, Also, making my book free on Amazon and giving it away.
Describe your desk
Loaded with a personal computer, phone, books, paper and pens.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the city of Lagos, Nigeria until I was the age of nineteen, after which I moved to the United States. It influenced my writing so much that I wrote a memoir about the great and tragic experiences I had in a developing nation.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing sometime in July, 2012. I published my first book on November 7, 2012.
Published 2015-02-13.
