Interview with JL Gray

What motivated you to become an indie author?
As long as I can remember I have created characters in my mind and played them out. Sometimes I even wrote them down! In my teenage years my friends would come to me and have me write poems or love letters for them. I strayed away as the publishing world could be so cruel. Two years ago I received a Kindle for Christmas and discovered all of these wonderful indie authors. It opened up a world to me that I didn't know could exist. Two years later I am dusting off my stories and making my dream a reallity.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has given me a chance as an indie author. It's actually quite easy once you get the hang of it. The process of the steps has been a blessing. I would have been pulling my hair out without them. I wouldn't have been able to get my work out to the world. The Style Guide is a love/hate relationship. I am referring back to it religiously now so that I will only love it in the future. Knowledge is power!
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Making the characters come to life on the page. Anytime a story can make you imagine it and experience the scene whether it be joy or sorrow that is a great story.
What do your fans mean to you?
I wouldn't be anywhere without them. Right now my sister is my biggest fan and the love and support she has shown me means the world.
What are you working on next?
Shelby's Secrets is close to completion. Her story is the next to be told in A Beautiful Girl series. Sunrise Promise is another series with Callie and Hunter who have been pleading for me to dust them off and let them emerge. So we will see who wins my attention.
Who are your favorite authors?
Kristen Ashley, R. L. Mathewson (by the way props to her for encouraging indie authors), Jamie Begley, Mia Diamond, Katie Reus, and Julie Ann Walker. Just to name a few. There are so many more talented writers out there.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My babies don't give me a choice! I have six fur babies who demand I let them outside every morning (and several times throughout the day; usually when the story's getting good). My significant other insists I get up with him every morning so he can spend time with me before he goes to work. A small price to pay for getting to live my dream! Other than that I fall asleep thinking about my characters and can't wait to wake up and continue telling their stories.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I would love to say jet setting to Paris or Milan; you know something interesting. I am a domestic engineer. It is an undervalued and underpaid job but it is so worth it. I read a lot. I read for inspiration. I spend quality time with my family and friends gabbing about their lives and my books.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
At first it was by description. Once I read one or two by a particular person or fell in love with an author I would consume their books. I search for them. I also do word of mouth. I don't like reviews where people say negative things. So I will read their positive reviews and determine if I want to invest in a new author but I am always willing to give someone new a try. You never know the story you are missing out on if you don't.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
As a child-no. As a teenager-probably not. As an adult-yes. I haven't opened it up to see what it looks like. Maybe someday.
What is your writing process?
First I just start telling the story. I break it up into chapters after that. Once I get halfway into my story I take notes in order to not have to remember where it is in the story. Sometimes I will walk away from it for weeks, months, or years and come back to it and see where I can improve or make the characters pop out more. I'm probably all over the place if I stopped to really think about it.
