Interview with Jay El Mitchell

Describe your desk
Nonexistent. Occasionally, my lap.
When did you first start writing?
When I was about ten years old. I read a lot of Goosebumps, and after reading the words "he opened his mouth to scream, but no sound came out" for possibly the hundredth time I found myself thinking, "I can do better than that."
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My dog needing to be fed and let out to avoid an accident. And chocolate chip muffins.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I'm also an artist (painting and drawing) and a gamer. The Sims and Zelda series are my favorites.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Actually, yes. Though not in great detail. I remember it did involve talking otters.
What is your writing process?
I have an idea, that lovely moment of discovery, followed by enthused, nearly manic production. 2/3rds through it I lose momentum, begin to doubt its quality, eventually give up. Months later I'll read it over on a whim, decide it's not so bad after all, and try to pick up where I left off. Unfortunately, a lot of the time I don't remember where I was going with the story. I've never been able to sit down and plot a story. For me, it's more an organic process, springing up naturally. My few plotted works felt very contrived.
How do you approach cover design?
Besides with a free graphic shop? I just try to isolate one item or moment that is easily relatable to the story, either take a photo or find a stock image, and fiddle in PhotoShop until it's acceptable.
What do you read for pleasure?
Suspense, paranormal, psych thrillers, horror, SciFi. And articles from cracked.com
What is your e-reading device of choice?
My Windows phone. Mainly because it's my only choice.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Honestly? It seems easier than going the traditional route, with far less possible rejection. If a publishing company offered me deal I'd snatch it up in a heartbeat, assuming it was a sound deal of course.
