Interview with Janice Mullings

Published 2017-12-07.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
The first story I ever wrote was about a teenager in boarding school. The book, of course was never published.
How do you approach cover design?
I think of what stands out most in my books; the place, the people. More often than not I use people on my covers.
What do you read for pleasure?
I mostly read action adventure, but if there is a romance novel that calls to me I go for it. I enjoy historical books by Jude Deveraux
Describe your desk
I try to keep my desk clear, but it sometimes ends up a bit cluttered. I make sure it is tidy after I finish writing for the day.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Jamaica. I include the Island in almost all my books. Actually, I've used Jamaica as a setting for most of my books.
When did you first start writing?
I began writing when I was in my teens. I began by writing poetry.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I published with Iuniverse first then with a traditional publisher. I think I got the wrong publisher because I became very turned off. I like the control I have with my work by being an indie author.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has not contributed to my success yet..
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love writing because I am very shy and this is the best way I know of expressing myself and entertaining people at the same time.
What do your fans mean to you?
My fans mean the world to me. Without them I would have no readers so I cherish them.
What are you working on next?
I am currently working on a book that takes place in the Blue Mountains of Jamaica about a young woman who was bullied in high school and told by her foster mother that she would not amount to anything. This all took place after she lost her grandmother in a house fire, the only relative she thought she had. Because of all she had been through she did not speak for five years. During those years she graduated from high school at the age of fourteen and went on to procure her PHD in neuroscience at the age of nineteen then found out that she was a part of a very wealthy, influential family.
Who are your favorite authors?
Jude Deveraux, Tom Clancy and Patterson
