Interview with Gordon Morse

How do you approach cover design?
I chose my own photographs based on the theme of the book. The picture I chose usually has great color, composition, and grabs the readers attention. The placement of the picture needs to allow for the title of the book to be seen easily and relates directly to the story.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
The books that I have written that I feel I got my story/message across the best are The Pugets, Romancing Pele, The Monster Marlin, The Volcano Automobile, and My Owhyee.

I enjoy history immensely and many of my stories follow the historic truth at the time and place. The "story" is woven around in both fiction and non-fiction.
What do you read for pleasure?
The news. Being a news journalist for most of my younger adult life I have not read anything for true pleasure since graduating high school. What I read is usually to deepen my knowledge and researching of facts. I even do this for personal insight and gain.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I have never read anything on an e-reading device. I have just recently started to read my newspaper on my computer.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I was born in Hawaii and was a teenager when World War II started with the bombing of Pearl Harbor. I would read the daily news to see what was actually happening around the islands versus what I was imagining by watching some activities around in my area. This "imagined story and research" is what I grew to be known for during most of my journalistic years.

Being in Hawaii where the main income is tourism, I began writing books for tourist in a "story" form that enticed the reader to experience the aura of the islands ... not a book that told them where to eat or buy trinkets.
When did you first start writing?
My first story was when I was 15. My English teacher at high school liked my stories and had me write a short story that he submitted to a tourism magazine on Hawaii. My short stores were published 3 times over the next few years.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Just a fun children's book using some of my photos to learn how to write in the eBook format.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
My daughter told me that many people no longer purchase paper books and that at my age, 88, it would definitely keep me busy.
What are you working on next?
My next book is about my youth growing up during World War II and how this event affected our lives.
Who are your favorite authors?
Samuel Clemens
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The fact that I can! The ability to write keeps me young. It is important to have a reason and to be productive and active every day.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
My other loves in life were gardening, fishing, and my FAMILY.
