Interview with Jo Grix

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Huntsville, Texas, but I spent a lot of time with my relatives in various parts of the state. I'd say that Huntsville specifically influenced my writing because it's was dead boring. By the time I was in the eighth grade, I'd realized my teachers couldn't tell the difference between writing a story or taking notes and thus I entertained myself.
When did you first start writing?
Seventh grade for fanfiction, eighth grade for original. I don't actually remember all the details, but I remember that Trebon's Journey morphed out of an original escapist story based on Trebon's future wife with a hefty influence from the Heralds of Valdemar.
What's the story behind your latest book?
It's the first story I ever wrote to completion, updates and improved with a history of fanfiction and education. I chose to focuse on it because there aren't many stories I know better than Trebon's Journey.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Time frame. I wanted to publish fast because it was done, I'd written it, and I wanted to show off. It's a bit egotistical, but everyone has to have a moment like that, I think.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
It's getting my book out there. I haven't really gotten many sales, but since I'm still in my first year of publishing, I don't expect much. Hopefully as time goes on and my work becomes more proliferate, Smashword's distribution system will play an important role.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Just putting it all together, the stories, the characters, the plot, exploring all the little cultural aspects, the influences that drive my characters. I can't fit it all into the stories, but I like knowing it.
What do your fans mean to you?
They're part of why I write. I want people to pick up my books and just enjoy them. They're written for fun, and pleasure, and that's what I want people to get out of them.
What are you working on next?
The sequel to Warrior's Rage, which is called A Fighter's Heart, about Trebon's journey back to Quanat, and the troubles he encounters along the way.

I'm also working on a science fiction novella called Ruby Quest which follows a pair of short stories I've shared, about psychic warriors and the lengths they'll go to when called on to save one of their own.

Then there's Midsummer's Oath, which is a different fantasy series about a group of people who put their faith in a pair of Gods to build a new land and the changes that would one day come of it.
Who are your favorite authors?
That's an easy one, my role models are Anne McCaffrey, Terry Brooks and Mercedes Lackey, and my other favorites are JK Rowlings, Tamora Pierce, and Anne Bishop.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Adventure, seeing, doing, and writing about what goes on. I have more stories in my mind than I have ways to share them.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Reading, web surfing, my day job, I'm pretty dull I guess.
