Interview with Dr John McElhaney

Published 2019-06-12.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I am always involved in church activities preaching and teaching. I also am involved with things in the community and helping abused and neglected children by serving as a court-appointed child advocate. I love to fish when I have time, and also love spending time with my family. But, writing takes up a large amount of my time.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I don't read fiction and choose only books that are going to increase my knowledge. I read mostly biblically based books and history
What is your writing process?
I wait until I get a burning desire to write on a subject, then I just go to it. If it is something that I need to research deeply as when I write about true crime, I spend a lot of time doing my research first. When I finish typing the manuscript I then do the editing. I do a lot of my editing as I go, although I have been told by other writers that you should wait till you finish to do any editing, I just cannot do that. I will edit and proofread the manuscript about five times because no matter how many times you edit, you will never get all the mistakes. I then arrange my book in the format I will use for it to print. I then prepare my cover and publish it. I always publish in print before I do it in digital.
How do you approach cover design?
I try to choose a cover that will relate to the message of the book, I like to use pictures on my covers.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
My very favorite book is the Bible, The Institutes of the Christian Religion, By John Calvin, Through Gates of Splendor, by Elizabeth Elliot, Tortured for Christ, by Richard Wurmbrand, and The Holiness of God, by R.C. Sproul
What do you read for pleasure?
The Bible and Bible commentaries, also history.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Kindle
Describe your desk
My disk most of the time is so pilled up and cluttered you would not think I could find anything on it, yet I know where everything is on it. I have an L-shaped desk with my laptop on the front part of my desk and the desktop that I now use to write on is on the side part of the desk with my printer.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Ten Mile Tennessee, very poor in the backwoods. My upbringing had a lot to do with my writing about my early life and the morals we were raised with
When did you first start writing?
I used to write years ago but only for my benefit. It was only after I retired that I started writing to publish.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The book that I just published, "The Biblical Family," was written to help people deal with family issues. Also to show this generation what God's intention was when he instituted marriage and the roles of the husband and wife in the family as well as the children and how they should be reared.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
The reason I chose to become an indie author was that I love to write and it is so easy to publish your own books today I would advise anyone who has a desire to write to go at it. Don't waste your money paying publishing companies to publish your work, you might as well flush it down the toilet. They will promise you that if they publish your book you will get more sales, it will be a lot better quality, and you should never try to publish your own work. All of that is a lie, they will do nothing for you to get your book to sell, and you will wind up paying them thousands of dollars.
