Interview with John Rigg

Published 2014-04-26.
Who are your favorite authors?
There are so many...but recently I've been seduced by Markus Zusak's The Book Thief, then there are authors like Colum McCann, Patricia Duncker, Zadie Smith, Auster, and Murakami. I love European literature from people lie Camus, Genet, Sartre and Gogol, Turgenev...should I go?
I haven't attempted to copy the style of any of these authors, instead I attempt to combine a good story which touches my heart or emotions in some way, and add a dash of magic and a little pepper...
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The sun in the sky, the magic in the air. I don't exactly bounce out of bed like Tigger, but then I don't mope about the riverside like Eeyore. Then it's take in any and every possible diversion before settling down to work in my studio.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Trying to convince my love to come close, let me hold her tight in my arms. Hahahahahahahahha
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I visit bookshops. I love to lose myself in the shelves of books, sit and read a few pages...
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
It was a thriller in the style of Raymond Chandler, but the hero was a robot in the form of Humphrey Bogart. The opening scene shows him dancing in the street...a wild tale of evil men and beautiful broads. It was wild fun to write, but...
What is your writing process?
If we're talking fiction, then sitting down every day and getting into a rhythm. I'll do research when I've tired the few braincells that jingle and jangle in my head.

If it's journalism, then I'll do the research, set out pages of facts all over my floor, plan out the piece, and finally write...
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
One of the earliest stories I read was the Cat in the Hat. I think I based my entire life on that cat's special philosophy!!
Describe your desk
Black, glass top...not really big enough for purpose
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
in the seedy mire of England's suburbia. It forced me to get out.
When did you first start writing?
Christmas Eve 1968. My parents made the mistake of putting writing paper and a pen in my Christmas stocking.
What's the story behind your latest book?
First Sight shows how a child's experiences forced him to see, and follows his life and his nightmares...
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The magic of getting paid for simply filling a blank page with words. No, really? Seeing words sing
